Engagement Strategies (Replay)
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning on Tuesday, November 22nd at 11 AM for a replay of our Engagement Strategies workshop. In this session, we explore increasing attendance by designing for student interaction with the instructor, the content, and with one another. We will discuss including participation as a graded item, activities that encourage student motivation, and creating a welcoming classroom culture and environment. Southeast Tourism Society Elects Andrea Kruszka to Board of Directors
TCRI (Tennessee Center for Rural Innovation) staff member, Andrea Kruszka, has been elected to the Southeastern Tourism Society’s Board of Directors. She will be working to promote the organization’s mission and vision by serving on one of the planning committees that support the four pillars of the organization. She says, “I’m honored to be elected as one of the Tennessee representatives on the board and look forward to using my knowledge of higher education to explore new partnerships between STS and the higher learning institutions in the service area.” She plans to aid TCRI in establishing companies and building economic development by obtaining her Travel Marketing Professional certification with the STS. Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Luke Parsons, TTU Physics
This week’s Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature work from Physics major Luke Parsons. In his talk Data Analysis of Neutron Capture on 134Xe, Luke will describe his work analyzing gamma ray spectra that provide important information needed to eliminate backgrounds in very sensitive experiments designed to better understand a fundamental particle called the neutrino. Luke will also talk about how germanium detectors, like those used to collect his data, are made and characterized. The seminar will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are encouraged to attend!

Hot Chocolate Reindeer Pre-Sale Fundraiser Nov 14-18
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be pre-selling Hot Chocolate Reindeer (hot chocolate mix and marshmallows- each reindeer makes approximately three cups of hot chocolate) through our Square Store from Nov 14-18. We will deliver them to your Tech mailbox (for students) or office (for faculty and staff) on Dec 1. One reindeer is $2 or you can buy 3 for $5. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) workshop on Nov 22
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be hosting a REU workshop on Tuesday, Nov 22 at 11 a.m. in SLH 126. REUs are summer research opportunities where students get paid to conduct original research for 10 weeks in the summer at universities around the country. Three students that participated in National Science Foundation funded REUs in Summer 2022 will present on what REUs are, how to find and apply to these programs, the benefits of participating in these programs, as well as their experiences. The workshop is open to all majors. Pizza and drinks will be provided, so please complete the RSVP form by Nov 20 if you plan to attend so we have a headcount for the food. - Hey guys! The Tennessee Tech Rotaract Club is having its next to last meeting of the semester on Thursday during dead hour. It will be held in its usual location, which is TJ Farr Room 203. We are encouraging everyone to come and hang out with us as we are preparing for an end to this semester. In this meeting, we will discuss Eagle Engage as well as a special opportunity we take part in almost every year we are able. We will have some kind of food available to you as well. This week, we are hosting Vincent Guilliams Jr., a two-time Tennessee Tech graduate and mechanical engineer from Oak Ridge National Laboratories who is working on the US ITER team, which is part of an international collaboration to create the world’s first functional nuclear fusion reactor! Come listen to his fascinating work and learn more about nuclear engineering and what it’s like to work at Oak Ridge.

Tech ASPIRES and Sociology and Criminal Justice Club Presenting: Movie Night
Tech ASPIRES and Sociology and Criminal Justice Club are hosting a movie night! We will be watching Wind River which is about a veteran hunter who helps an FBI agent investigate the murder of a young Native American woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation.

Where: Bell Hall Auditorium
This event is free for anyone who is interested in learning and talking about domestic violence among Indigenous women. There will be free popcorn, soda, and cotton candy!

Carrick Receives Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award
Dr. Jesse Carrick has been named a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar. The award is based on accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching, and provides an unrestricted research grant of $75,000. Carrick is one of only 8 nation-wide to receive this award. Nominees must be engaged in research and teaching primarily with undergraduates. Institutions may submit only one Henry Dreyfus nomination annually.
Carrick’s research is entitled, “Synthetic Approaches to Minor Actinide Separations from Lanthanides Contained within Spent Nuclear Fuel.”
The Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of the chemical sciences. Established in 1946 by chemist, inventor, and businessman Camille Dreyfus as a memorial to his brother Henry, the Foundation became a memorial to both men when Camille Dreyfus died in 1956. Throughout its history the Foundation has sought to take the lead in identifying and addressing needs and opportunities in the chemical sciences through a series of programs and awards.

Masquerade on November 18th

Memento: Anna Grayson Senior Thesis Exhibition
Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metals
A thesis exhibition by Anna Grayson to be on display at the Appalachian Center for Craft. The show is to be exhibited in the Lakeview Gallery from November 23 – December 6, 2022. The exhibition features a wide range of works centering on the stigma surrounding all things death and dying.
“Death is something we all face at some point in our life so why is it that we have made it into such a sensitive subject? Life and death are two sides of the same coin.” says Grayson

University Orchestra Concert!
The University Orchestra will perform its final concert of the semester on Tuesday evening, November 22nd at 7:30pm, in Wattenbarger auditorium at the Bryan Fine Arts Center. The program will include works by Beethoven, Manuel de Falla, and Stefan Freund. “divertennmento” for string orchestra, was commissioned and premiered by the University Orchestra in 2009 as a part of a Center Stage residency with composer Stefan Freund. “I think it’s great that we have a work written specifically with us in mind and I enjoy performing it with each new generation of students at Tech” says Orchestra Director Dan Allcott. “Stefan was born in Memphis, and as you might expect, this work reflects on three important types of music in Tennessee: Country, Blues, and Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
The concert is free of charge and open to the public.
The University Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Dan Allcott, is comprised of students from across campus and various disciplines. It is open to orchestral stringed instrument players with previous experience. Wind, brass, and percussion players are assigned by Tech professors of those instruments.
