Mantra Health
The Tennessee Tech University Counseling Center is excited to announce that expanded virtual mental health care is now available to all students in partnership with tele-mental health provider, Mantra Health. Using Mantra’s telehealth platform, students can sign up for video calls and/or brief and short-term psychiatric services with a therapist through a secure patient portal. Mantra has a directory of licensed mental health therapists available to support students through video and messaging services. Students are able to select a provider that is right for them by providing details about their gender ID, ethnicity, school schedule and more. The Iris Review Release Party
We are pleased to invite you to the launch party for our newest edition of the Iris Review!
The annual print literary magazine is run by Tennessee Tech students enrolled in the ENGL 4460 Literary Magazine Editing/Iris Review class each Spring. The course encourages students in the promotion, editing, and design of the publication.
The print journal features the talents of literary and visual artists in Cookeville and the surrounding area.
We would love for you to celebrate the contributions made from Tennessee Tech students, alumni, faculty and staff, including Cookeville’s neighboring creatives in our latest edition.
The magazine also features the poetry and prose of TTU undergraduate students that received awards in the English Department creative writing contests and the winners of the Iris Review Young Writer’s Competition, a new contest for high school students launched this year.
Please join us for readings of poetry and prose, and some light refreshments at the Backdoor Playhouse on Thursday, May 4th from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Professional Privilege Tax 2023
Under TCA 67-4-1709, the professional privilege tax is due June 1 each year for individuals licensed or registered to practice in Tennessee for the following professions:
Attorney
Agent(Securities)
Broker-Dealer
Investment Adviser
LobbyistFor those so licensed, Tennessee Tech University will remit this for you. The amount of tax will be included as additional compensation on each affected employee’s W-2. If you are registered or licensed to practice in more than one of the following professions, you are only required to pay the $400 tax once per year.
TTU must report to the Department of Revenue the names and professions of eligible employees no later than June 1, 2023. Those eligible must currently be in an active status in their profession.
Please provide the names and professions of anyone in your area of responsibility to Dustin Agee at dagee@tntech.edu or Jenni Roberts at jaroberts@tntech.edu at your earliest convenience, but not later than May 15, 2023. I will compile a master list to transmit to the State.

WEST Available During Finals Week
Need help with final papers? WEST has hours available during finals week! The Writing Excellence Studio at Tech provides one-on-one writing consultation for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, regardless of what field or writing you’re working on. We can work with you on things like clarity, cohesion, logical progression, or just making sure you’re doing what the assignment asks you to do in the most effective way possible. And we’re happy to work with you at any stage of the writing process. Regardless of your skill level, we’re here to help you feel more confident in your writing abilities. Retirement Reception for Lauren Neal
The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning will be hosting a retirement reception for Ms. Lauren Neal. Lauren has served the students, faculty, and staff of Tennessee Tech for the past 28 years. The reception will be held in the CITL, Volpe Library Room 113 on Monday, May 1st from 1-3 PM. Congratulations Clarice Kiser – Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award
Clarice Kiser, a senior pursuing a double major in Biology and Geosciences, is the recipient of the 2022 Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award. This is the highest student award given by the Tennessee Tech College of Arts and Sciences. Ms. Kiser is recognized for her excellence in three vital functions of a liberally educated person: (1) critical thinking; (2) context-consciousness; and (3) communication.
In his recommendation, Dr. Michael Harrison, Earth Sciences, writes that Clarice is “simply a remarkable person.” That her qualities, “all embrace the core values of the Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award.”
Not only is her G.P.A. great, Clarice also revived the Tri-Beta Club in Biology, is a student contractor for the United States Geological Survey in Nashville working to build a hydrogeologic database for rock units in the Ozark region of Arkansas, conducts her senior thesis research with Dr. Harrison, is a teaching assistant in Biology labs, tutors for the Honors Program, is fluent in Spanish, performs as first chair cellist in the Tennessee Tech Orchestra, serves as mentor to other cellists, earned her private pilot’s license during her freshman year at Tennessee Tech, and teaches children about space and science at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama during the summer.
Congratulations Clarice! It seems that the sky is the limit for you and we wish you the very best in all of your plans!

Dr. Michael Olsen Receives Award for Research and Scholarly Activity
Dr. Michael Olsen of the Department of Foreign Languages is the recipient of the 2023 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Research and Scholarly Activity. This award recognizes a significant research publication or creative project appearing during the previous two years and receiving expert critical review. Dr. Olsen is recognized for his paper published in “Foreign Language Annals” that analyzed the effect of instruction on preempting an Animacy-based system for object pronouns for learners of Spanish as a second language.

Student Affairs Student Spotlight – Rebecca Firth
Congratulations Rebecca Firth on being named this month’s Student Affairs Student Spotlight, an honor bestowed upon her because of her inspiring leadership and decorated academic career. Rebecca is a senior Pure Chemistry Major with Minors in Music Performance and Astronomy who hails from Kingsport, Tennessee. She excels as a student, as evident through her receiving the Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award in 2022 from the College of Arts and Sciences and the multiple research projects that she has collaborated on. Impressively, this research has resulted in two publications within The Journal of Physical Chemistry A. She has succeeded not only in the classroom but outside as well. Rebecca is a member of the Tennessee Technological University Flute Organization and the American Chemical Society, or ACS. Rebecca has proven herself as a leader by holding many positions within ACS, including President, for which she has been recognized by being awarded the Leadership Development Award in 2022 from ACS. She plans to use her strong leadership capabilities in her future career as a professor in Chemistry, a path she will further pursue by attaining a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Mississippi. Rebecca’s strong character, proficiency in leadership, and affinity for scholarship perfectly exemplify the attributes of a Golden Eagle, making her an excellent selection for this month’s Student Affairs Student Spotlight.
