Tech Togetherness Award Nominations
Although things have looked a little different this year, we still want to reach out and acknowledge those that have helped us remain together in spirit. This year we will be awarding six (6) Unsung Hero awards. All regular full-time and part-time Tennessee Tech employees are eligible for nomination. The goal of Tech Togetherness is to bridge the gaps and create stronger relationships between administrators, faculty, staff, and the Tech community at large. With everyone moving in the same direction we can all individually and collectively reach this goal.

Game Dev Club Guest Speaker – Jordan Magnuson
The Game Dev Club is pleased to announce that Jordan Magnuson will be speaking with us! Jordan Magnuson is a game designer, known for games such games as “Loneliness” and “Freedom Bridge,” and founded the influential indie developer forum TIGSource. He holds an MFA in Digital Art & New Media from the University of California Santa Cruz. Jordan will be joining us on April 29th at 11:00am, at Clement Hall 212. Students may also attend via Zoom. Senior Thesis Exhibition by Tabitha Thierjung opens April 22 at Appalachian Center for Craft
Tabitha Thierjung will present “Going Through Spells,” taking place at the Appalachian Center for Craft in the Joe L. Evins Gallery on April 22 – May 3, 2021.
Going Through Spells will feature blown, sculpted, and fused glass pieces hand crafted by Tabitha. Take a moment to come by and join Tabitha on a journey to find magic in the mundane.
Due to the current restrictions with COVID-19, there will not be an opening reception. The gallery will be open Monday – Saturday, 10 – 5 a.m. and Sunday 12 – 5 p.m.

You are invited to view student presentations of Capstone projects at the 2021 Senior Design Expo. This year’s Capstone projects will represent more than:

- 350 students
- 25 faculty advisors
30 industry sponsors/mentors, many with several employees helping with multiple projects

A History of Black Students & Employees at Tennessee Tech
The Tennessee Tech University Archives’ newest digital exhibit is now live! “‘Imagine Going Half a Day and Not Seeing Anybody That Looks Like You’: A History of Black Students & Employees at Tennessee Tech” provides a survey of the Black history of the university from its founding in 1915 through the present day. It features over 175 photographs, oral histories, clippings, flyers, and other documents.

The exhibit is part of the Office of Multicultural Affairs’ celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Leona Lusk Officer Black Cultural Center. The previous two digital exhibits for the anniversary can be browsed here.

A Day Without Plants! April 22, 2021
This Earth Day, the Office of Sustainability will be attempting to go 24 hours without any help from the plant world, and we want you to join us! The goal of this activity will be to show just how reliant we all are on plants. This will be taking place on April 22, 2021, but feel free to choose another day this month to participate that will best fit your schedule! Check out the guidelines on our website here:

Arbor Day Tree Scavenger Hunt, April 22-30
April 22nd through April 30th the Office of Sustainability is going to be hosting an Arbor Day Tree Scavenger Hunt. We have provided you with ten clues about ten different trees on campus! For the scavenger hunt, snap a picture with as many trees as you can identify from the clues and e-mail them to us at TTUGreen@tntech.edu . For extra points, post them on your Instagram and tag us @TNTechEcoEagles. Whoever submits the most trees wins! The winner will be announced May 3rd. Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Professor Jennifer Whitten, Tulane
Professor Jennifer Whitten, from Tulane University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, will be visiting (virtually) this Friday, April 23rd to give this week’s Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar. In her talk Exploring Venus, Professor Whitten will describe her work deciphering the geologic history of Venus using radar to peer through Venus’ thick and (mostly) optically opaque atmosphere. The talk will be at 4pm and is geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! 2021 Outstanding Diversity Advocate Award Recipient
The Commission on the Status of Blacks and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, awarded the Outstanding Diversity Advocate Award to Dr. Julie Baker, Associate Dean of the College of Education, on April 6. This award was given in recognition of all the meaningful work and outstanding support Dr. Baker has done in the many areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has lead by example and provided outstanding support in the following areas: mentoring support to minority students, social support, and academic support. Thank you again to Dr. Baker for all her efforts and commitment to the students, university, and the local community. Congratulations!

CEO of Earth Science Laboratories to speak at 11 a.m., Thurs., Apr. 29
Tech alum David Nicholas, CEO of Earth Science Laboratories in Rogers, Arkansas, will be speaking at 11 a.m., Thurs., Apr. 29, in Room 113 of the Stonecipher Lecture Hall (SLH). Nicholas will be discussing ESL’s research and development ventures. ESL has found that a unique chemical composition accounted for many distinctive features of its products and is now the basis of the company’s rapidly growing technology platform. The primary acid comprising the company’s chemical composition is a polymeric arrangement of ammonium bisulfate, or PABS. The PABS has multiple unique characteristics that provide for specific benefits in water treatment, agriculture, metal plating, battery electrolytes, pharmaceuticals, and more. ESL is exploring opportunities for collaborative research as the company sees many opportunities for the chemistry that are outside its founding expertise in water treatment. The Office of Research and Economic Development and the Chemical Engineering Department are hosting the event.
