RUC Tech Pride RoomSo far, 15% of our faculty (n=66) have participated in a town hall. General Education impacts all students in all colleges. This is an opportunity to share your ideas of what Tech graduates are expected to know as a foundation for both their academic studies and future lives.
Let us know what skills and knowledge Tennessee Tech graduates should have to best prepare them for their intended careers and their future as informed citizens of the state, region, nation and world. We want to hear from you!
Light refreshments will be provided.
Please encourage your students to attend the meetings held specifically for students. The next student town hall will be Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. in the RUC Tech Pride Room.

Cohen’s Lab Leads Workshop with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
As part of his ongoing outreach efforts, Dr. Bradley Cohen’s (biology) lab coordinated and led a three-day workshop with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service entitled, “Wetland Management for Wintering Waterfowl and other Wetland-dependent Birds.”
This was an in-class and in-field workshop focused on practical aspects of wetland management for wetland-dependent birds during the non-breeding period. Cohen and his students gave talks throughout the series. The goal was to empower National Wildlife Refuge staff to perform management activities that follow the best-available science, are adequately documented for The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and contribute directly to the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and other international conservation initiatives. Womack History Lecture-Thursday
The History Department will be holding its annual Womack Lecture on Thursday, November 2nd at 6:00 p.m. in Derryberry Hall auditorium. Jefferson Cowie will present “Freedom’s Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power.” The event is free and open to the public. Cohen’s Research Results in Three Published Articles in Three Months
Among Dr. Bradley Cohen’s many research accomplishments, he can add three published journal articles in the past three months! Cohen, associate professor of Biology, currently has nine active grants with cumulative value, thus far, of over $2 million. Granting agencies include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Ducks Unlimited – Canada, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. At one point recently, he had eleven active grants. With all of this research, he still manages to teach students from undergraduate through Ph.D. Many of his students obtain first-hand experience working with him these projects.

Wesley Haunted House
The Wesley Foundation will be hosting a Haunted House tour from Oct. 29th to 31st from 8-10 pm. TTU Percussion Studio Presents: The Haunting of BFA
The Haunting of the Bryan Fine Arts is structured both as a haunted house and a trick-or-treating event. While there is no cost of admission and the trick or treat event is completely free, students will be cotton candy this year in order to raise money for next year’s event. There will be seating available for attendees.
At 6:30 P.M., the tours will begin for families and children. Previously, the attendance rate had not been exceedingly high. Last year, due to extensive marketing, hundreds of people ended up walking through our doors. After that experience, we restructured how we plan to run the tour groups and have streamlined our system. Now, the building is set up to be one continuous loop where no overcrowding will occur.
A massive detail which sets this haunted house apart from others in the area is our emphasis on the music. Many students who are involved have worked hard to learn pieces of music which are on-theme to the Halloween season. We perform these for the community as a part of this event.

- At 8:00 P.M., or whenever the families and children stop showing up en masse, we add a few more fixtures to the building to make the atmosphere scarier and more akin to a traditional haunted house. Gurusinghe Receives ACS Petroleum Research Fund Grant
Dr. Ranil Gurusinghe (Chemistry) recently received an American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Grant. The granted funding will support the investigation of the chemistry of extremely reactive hydrocarbon radicals that play key roles in combustion, pyrolysis, and astrochemical environments. Gurusinghe’s lab will combine laser photolysis, microwave spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations to generate, probe, and characterize radical species inside a supersonically cooled molecular beam. Our results will demonstrate a versatile strategy for characterizing multichannel reaction mechanisms in hydrocarbon-rich environments.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Gabriel Adams and Michael Potts
This week’s Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will be given by TTU physics majors Gabriel Adams and Michael Potts. Both Gabriel’s talk, Analyzing Decay Patterns of Xenon-134, and Michael’s talk, Simulating Self Absorption Due to Neutron Inelastic Scattering in Xenon 134, will present different aspects of studies to understand background processes that can complicate the search for an extremely rare nuclear process called neutrinoless double beta decay. The seminar will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210 with snacks served starting at 3:30pm. These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend.
