Free Chemistry Activity Bags Giveaway- Saturday, Oct 23
In honor of National Chemistry Week, the Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be giving away free chemistry activity bags at the Putnam County library (50 E Broad St) from 12 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. The bags include a copy of the Celebrating Chemistry magazine, as well as goggles and supplies for several of the activities included in the magazine. The theme of NCW is “Fast or Slow: Chemistry Makes it Go” and helps teach people of all ages about reaction rates and factors that impact how fast chemical reactions happen. This event is open to the general community and is accessible to all ages and education levels, so please come get a bag and share this information with anyone that may be interested. The bags are first come first served and will be given out while supplies last. We hope to see you there! Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.

Carin’ About The Strays (CATS) is a 501(c)3 organization based out of Cookeville, Tennessee that specializes in the rescue and support of felines in Putnam County, Tennessee. The focus of CATS is to help care for abandoned or mistreated animals through foster programs, spay and neuter interventions, and socialization of orphaned kittens in order to facilitate successful adoptions. Most kittens taken in by CATS are abandoned, orphaned, and/or severely mistreated.

Pre-proposals for NSF MRI funding due Nov. 12 to Office of Research
The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation funding is a limited submission program that increases access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training. An MRI award supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.
Tennessee Tech may submit or be included as a significantly funded subawardee in no more than three MRI proposals. Therefore, a pre‐proposal is required to be submitted by all interested faculty and an internal review conducted to determine which proposals will be submitted to NSF. The pre‐proposal must be submitted to the Office of Research on or before noon, Friday, November 12, as a single PDF document via the research@tntech.edu email account. Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this week: J. Dittert, Z. Hinchman, B. Long
This week in the Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar, we’ll hear from three engineering majors who will describe their work helping to develop an on-campus ion beam laboratory. In his talk Designing an Ion Beam Laboratory and Ion Source, Braden Long, a Civil Engineering major, will describe his efforts to devise an effective layout for the main components of the beam line in the limited space available. Mechanical Engineering majors Jackson Dittert and Zachary Hinchman will then discuss their design for one of the beam line components in their talk Designing a Laser Ablation Ion Source.The seminar will be this Friday, October 22nd at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! Faculty Success Story: Dr. Arce Receives OChE Award
Rural Reimagined (RR) congratulates Dr. Pedro Arce on receiving the 2021 Outstanding Chemical Engineer Alum Award (OChE) at Purdue University for his work in engineering education and “his forward-thinking approach to developing an interdisciplinary model defining the ‘new’ engineer.” He has worked alongside RR on many projects and collaborations and was recognized recently for his work promoting a new type of professional engineer – one that is holistic, innovative, socially impactful, and with an entrepreneur mindset. “Engineering is not only about formulae, experimental labs and practice, it also involves the understanding of social issues and entrepreneurship to become impactful in helping communities with their challenges.”
Rural Reimagined is excited to continue its partnership with Dr. Arce, the Chemical Engineering Department, and the engineers that will graduate and hopefully serve our surrounding rural areas. Wings up!

Landscape Workshop’s paid internship program will provide students with training in a wide array of departments including maintenance, enhancements, irrigation, seasonal color, and business development. Interns will work directly in the field at one of their branch locations under the guidance of a seasoned mentor for 8-12 weeks. Landscape Workshop will also be recruiting for their full-time field manager positions.

Coffee Webinar- Wedesday, Oct 20 at 6 p.m.
Have you ever wondered why you can have a good cup of coffee one day but not the next? Join the Student Members of the American Chemical Society as we host the webinar “Coffee: A Chemical and Physical Perspective” on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in LSC 1211. Christopher Hendon of the University or Oregon will discuss how he uses chemistry and physics to isolate the most impactful variables in the reproduction of cup quality, while optimizing the usage of coffee to maximize profitability and flavor. We will serve coffee, hot cocoa, and warm apple cider and snacks. You’re encouraged to bring your own cup to reduce waste, but we will have cups available if you need one. Eagle Works Idea Challenge is back!
Who: All students, all programs, across campus!
What: Come up with an idea for a product, business, service, etc. Give a 90 second pitch to our panel of judges and compete for $1,500 in prizes!
Why: Creative problem solving, gain confidence, share an idea, win prizes, and have fun!
When: Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.
Where: Wherever you are! This year’s challenge is virtual!Students can compete alone or in teams, and will have 90 seconds to pitch their idea – no PowerPoint, no Q&A. Your idea doesn’t need to be fully thought out, but it should be feasible and solve a problem. Get creative and think big!
There will be two virtual workshops on Oct. 20 & 27 at 5 p.m. to help prepare for the challenge as well as virtual practice on Wednesday, Nov. 3 and Monday, Nov. 8 before the competition.
