Student Members of American Chemical Society Chapter Wins Top Awards
The Tennessee Tech Chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) recently received awards from the ACS Society Committee on Education (SOCED) for the 2022-2023 academic year for the chapter’s programs and activities as described in their chapter report. The Tennessee Tech SMACS Chapter received both Outstanding and Green Chemistry Awards from SOCED. For the 2022-2023 academic year, SOCED awarded 71 chapters outstanding, 122 chapters commendable, and 135 chapters honorable mention. In addition, 21 student chapters also received a green chemistry award for successfully completing at least three green chemistry activities throughout the year. This continues the tradition of the Tennessee Tech SMACS Chapter being one of the most active and highest ranked ACS Student Chapters in the world. For more information email smacsttu@gmail.com.

Cohen’s Lab to Lead TWRA Meetings Across State
Dr. Bradley Cohen’s (biology) lab has been working with TWRA to create new Deer and Turkey Management Units and season setting regulations across the state. This group is hosting public meetings with TWRA across the state. The group hopes to get the public’s feedback about these hunting units and management efforts.
The closest meeting to Cookeville will be held at the Crossville Shooting Sports Park on Wednesday, October 25, 6-8 p.m. The public is welcome!

Tech Soccer Wins Back-to-Back OVC Regular Season Championship Title
A 2-1 win over Little Rock on Sunday afternoon gave your Tennessee Tech Soccer team a second-consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Championship title! The Golden Eagles finished their regular season 8-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in league play. Tech has received a double-bye and will return to action at home for the OVC Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, November 2 at 4:00 p.m.

Halloswing- Thursday 10/26
Join Swing Dance Club on Thursday, October 26th @8:00 pm for a night of dancing in the Dance Studio of Memorial Gym. We will be playing some halloween songs that you can swing dance to or just come listen to. Costumes are encouraged, and there will be free T-shirts and snacks!
We will also be collecting donations for the Food Pantry at this event. If you bring at least one food item, you will be entered into our giveaway!

Today (10/23/2023) from 7:00PM to 10:00PM, Rhythm Games Club will be hosting a Shred Off Event located in Bruner Hall – Room 228 for all Rock Band / Guitar Hero enthusiasts, as well as people interested in the club! There will be a space for competitive players consisting of three divisions: Medium, Hard, and Expert! Don’t want to compete? No worries! Enhancing Your Online Learning with YuJa Media
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) for a discussion on Tuesday, October 24th at 11 AM via Teams. During this workshop, participants will explore the benefits of embedding YuJa videos in online courses to engage students effectively. We will demonstrate how to add quizzes within your videos to assess comprehension and encourage active learning. We will also hear from faculty who have successfully integrated YuJa into their courses, gaining valuable insights and practical tips. Kyle Murphy Receives an American Chemical Society Grant
Dr. Kyle Murphy (Chemistry) has received a grant from the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Petroleum Research Fund for Undergraduate New Investigators. This grant will provide stipends for up to four undergraduate students to work in the Murphy Lab over the next two summers, as well as for two undergraduates in the upcoming fall and spring semesters.
Students in the Murphy Lab will synthesize novel porphyrin-like macrocycles and investigate their interactions with asphaltenes found in water bodies from natural petroleum reservoirs. The goal of this research is to learn more about the variety of asphaltenes found in petroleum, and to utilize the macrocycles in aiding removal of these impurities from water bodies.
