20th annual Festival of Student Writing

RUC Multipurpose Room (2nd floor)The annual Festival of Student Writing is back—for the twentieth time! This lively and popular event features hundreds of projects created by students in English Composition classes (ENGL 1010 and 1020), who display and discuss their work at various booths and tables. For these projects, participating composition instructors encourage their students to adapt their writing and research to create projects other than traditional essays. Visitors may expect to see posters, exhibits, brochures, multimedia presentations, and performances about a wide range of subjects. All are invited to this event, which is sponsored by the composition program and the Department of English. For questions, contact abaker@tntech.edu.

Human Resources Organizational Changes
The Human Resources Department is excited to announce some organizational changes for your awareness.
Ali Sparkman has been promoted to the Employee Relations Specialist position. Ali will provide guidance and direction on various employee relations issues, including performance management, conflict resolution, policy interpretation, HR investigations, and other employment issues.
Please welcome Loren Bowman, who has been hired as an HR Generalist. Loren’s primary responsibilities are focused on recruiting, employment, onboarding, and general HR matters.

Bobby Taylor named Associate Athletic Director for Development
Bobby Taylor has been named the new Associate Athletic Director of Development for Tennessee Tech.
In 2019, he joined Tech’s University Development team where he focused on fundraising for the College of Business, College of Interdisciplinary Studies and Whitson-Hester School of Nursing.
Prior to his employment with the university, Bobby worked for Service Transport, Inc., Averitt Express and Takeda Pharmaceuticals. During his time with Takeda, he earned numerous sales awards including the Cresset Award in 2010 (number two in the nation) and the Silver Award in 2016 (top 20%).
Bobby holds a degree in business administration from Tech.

International Night with Tech Men’s Basketball
All Tech international students are invited to International Night as your Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball team take on Western Carolina on Tuesday, November 28 at 6:00 p.m.
Tech international students are encouraged to bring a large flag of their home country to be displayed on the upper bowl of the Hooper Eblen Center. Flags can be dropped of at the Athletics Ticket Office located at 1100 McGee Blvd by Monday, November 20. Students can pick their flags back up on Wednesday, November 29 at the Ticket Office.

OCM Seeking Student Workers for Spring
Communications & Marketing has job openings in Social Media and Web and Digital Media for student workers for next semester. Paid positions and internships available.
Social Media students help use social media to tell the story of Tennessee Tech. They craft and execute content for social media platforms, and effective communication skills and a demonstrated writing ability are required. Experience with photo and video a plus.
The Web and Digital Media student worker will need to be able to design and coordinate content that supports our digital map and signage platforms that is visually appealing and aligns with the university’s brand and messaging. Skills in Adobe Creative products, Canva, or other digital content creation tools are required.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail are required. The position is open to all majors.

Tennessee Tech College of Business is excited to announce its SuitsGiving drive-thru donation event. The donations are being collected for the College of Business’s Business Professional Closet (BPC). The BPC is a free resource for all Tech students to have access to professional clothing. SuitsGiving will be held in the front entrance of Foundation Hall on November 17th, 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. We are searching for the following items in all sizes, but especially XS and XXL: suits, sports coats, khaki pants, button-up shirts, ties, belts, shoes, dresses, blouses, pant suits, blazers, dress pants/chinos, and jewelry. Rahnama’s Research Published in the Journal, “Nature, Ecology and Evolution”
Dr. Mostafa Rahnama’s, assistant professor in biology, research, “Recent co-evolution of two pandemic plant diseases in a multi-hybrid swarm,” was published in the November 2023 edition of the journal “Nature, Ecology and Evolution.”
In this paper, Rahnama and colleagues revealed the genetic evolution processes that led to two epidemic outbreaks, wheat blast and grey leaf spot, during the late 20th century in South America. Today, wheat blast is recognized as the most dangerous plant pathogen globally, posing a substantial risk to global food security.

The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be pre-selling Hot Chocolate Reindeer (hot chocolate mix and marshmallows- each reindeer makes approximately three cups of hot chocolate) through our Square Store from Nov 15-21. We will deliver them to your Tech mailbox (for students) or office (for faculty and staff) on Nov 30. One reindeer is $2 or you can buy 3 for $5. Autonomous Robotics Club VEX U Team Claims 1st Place on Global Skills Ranking!
Last Saturday, the Golden Eagles VEX U Robotics Team associated with the Autonomous Robotics Club (ARC) achieved the current highest combined skills score among all VEX U teams around the world, which has 300+ teams competing annually. In the VEX Robotics Competition, teams clash with the goal of outscoring their opponent in robot sports.
The Skills Challenge of VRC allows teams to run a time trial, where their goal is to score points unopposed during a 1-minute period. Teams get 3 autonomous runs where the robot runs off its own code and sensors, and 3 driver controlled runs where team members operate the robots. ARC’s max scores were 134 driver and 61 autonomous, for a max total score of 195.
ARC will clash with other teams from around the country at their first tournament of the season on December 2nd. For more info about Autonomous Robotics Club, come see us in the iMakerSpace (3rd floor of the Library) on Tuesdays at 7pm, and join our Discord server through the student hub! -
AIAA Michelle Evans Virtual Guest Speaker
The TTU AIAA student chapter will be virtually hosting Ms. Michelle Evans from Mach-25-Media on Thursday 11/16 at 11AM in Brown 237. She is the author of the bestselling book “The X-15 Rocket Plane, Flying the First Wings into Space”. Ms. Evans will be presenting on the remarkable history of the X-15, one-on-one interviews with the pilots including Neil Armstrong, and the innovative engineering that went into the world’s fastest plane.

“Once”: Laura Lester Senior Thesis Exhibition
Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay
Laura Lester’s installation, “Once” will be represented in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, weaving, and woodwork. The project depicts a life-size display of a childhood bedroom merged with dream imagery rendered in both realistic and surrealistic forms resulting in a thought-provoking experience.
Drawing inspiration from her personal life, travels, dreams, and love of folklore. Laura’s installation “Once” aims to investigate and interpret her inner landscape through visual and tactile symbolism.
The exhibit will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from Nov. 22 – Dec. 5, 2023, in the Lake View Gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft. Exhibition reception will take place on Dec. 2, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
