  • Fall 2020 Campus-Wide Solar System Model

    You may have noticed a miniature model of the solar system in front of Au Bon Pain in the Volpe Library.  The sun in that model is serving as the scale model sun in our campus-wide (and further) scale model of the solar system!  Due to restrictions this year, we did not place the scaled planets on campus, but instead, have created a video about where they would be.  Take a break from studying and take a walk around campus to visit the locations presented in the video.  We in Astronomy 1010 hope you enjoy it!

  • Do you have what it takes to be a Goldwater Scholar?

    Are you interested in a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering? Or do you know a student who qualifies? In the spring 2021, the Goldwater Foundation will award scholarships covering eligible expenses for up to $7500 per year.  To be considered: you must be a current full-time Soph or Jr, intend to pursue a baccalaureate degree, have 1-2 years of undergraduate study remaining, have a B avg or equivalent, and be a US citizen or permanent resident who will pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. More details here:  https://goldwater.scholarsapply.org/

    Students should contact Dr. Mary Kidd (mkidd@tntech.edu) by 12/11 to be considered for nomination. Nominees will be selected and notified by 12/14. Application materials must be submitted for Dr. Kidd’s review by 1/22/2021 so that any changes can be made by the due date at 5:00 pm on 1/29/2021.

  • Reception to be held 12/8 for the Director of the Fitness Center

    A retirement reception will be held on Tuesday, December 8th from 1:30 to 3pm in the Marc L. Burnett Student Recreation and Fitness Center for the long-time Director, David Mullinax.  Mr. Mullinax is retiring from Tech after 29 years of service to the campus community.  The reception will be held in the lobby of the new fitness center, where he will welcome colleagues and friends.  There will be individually wrapped cookies served, a guest book to sign, and a plaque presentation.  Please make plans to stop by and give your congrats and well wishes.

    Huge congratulations to Zachary Plattner!

     

    The Upper Cumberland Business Journal just published Zach’s (Accounting Senior) book review on How I Built This by Guy Raz. This semester, Mr. Plattner worked very hard to complete the assignment for his Business Communications course.

  • Pantry Hours – Finals Week

    Pantry Hours – Finals Week

    The Campus Food Pantry will be open during finals week, but not its regular hours.

    We will be open the following hours:

      • Tuesday 10am – 1pm

     

      • Wednesday 10am – 1pm

     

      Thursday 1pm – 5pm

    After finals, we will only have the auxiliary pantry open until our volunteers are back in January.  

    The auxiliary pantry is located behind the front desk in the library and is available any hours that the library is open.  Ask the front desk attendant to escort you back there.

  • Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Physics Advanced Laboratory Presentations

    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Physics Advanced Laboratory Presentations

    This week’s (virtual) Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar will feature Dakota Bowser and Damien DeArmitt who will present some of their work from the Physics Department’s Advanced Laboratory class. Dakota will discuss his use of a spherical pendulum to measure a magnetic moment, and Damien will describe some applications of a Michelson Interferometer. The presentations will be this Friday, December 4th at 4pm. This year’s Giving Tuesday focused on University Archives & Special Collections, the area on campus responsible for preserving photographs, manuscripts, and archives of Tech and the Upper Cumberland.   • ’20 Holiday Payroll Deadlines

    2020 Holiday Payroll Deadlines

    Please observe the following deadlines during the upcoming holiday season.

    December Student and Temp payroll is on Thursday, December 10

      • Extra Pay timesheets are due by 4:30 PM on Thursday, December 3

     

      • November leave reports are due by Wednesday, December 2 (Approvals due Monday, December 7)

     

      • All other payroll items normally due on the 15th are due on Monday, December 7

     

      • December monthly payroll is on Wednesday, December 23

     

      Any checks not picked up will be mailed at 3:30 on December 23

    January Deadlines

    Timesheets for work done in December by student and temporary hourly employees may be approved as soon as December work is finished. Any times not approved before the holiday break will be due by 11:00 AM on January 4, 2021.
