Please join us on Thursday, Sept. 16th at 11 am in HH 214 for Nontraditional Student Organization (NTSO) meeting. Nontraditional students are defined as being independent for financial aid purposes, having one or more dependents, being a single caregiver, not having a traditional high school diploma, delaying postsecondary enrollment, attending school part-time, and/or being employed full time (U.S. Dept. of Education, 2017). Serena: Superwoman as Every(black)woman – Monday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
Writer Tamara Winfrey-Harris’ presentation, “Serena: Superwoman as Every (black) woman”, digs into the way mainstream media depict black women to reveal common stereotypes and discusses the need to change the way black women are portrayed. This Center Stage event is cohosted by the Women’s Center with the Department of English’s Creative Writing program and Multicultural Affairs. Friday Focus: Textbook Affordability / Book Orders
Friday Focus sessions are designed to provide just-in-time resources and information for faculty throughout the semester. Each session focuses on diverse resources, tools, or programs available to support faculty and/or student success. This week’s session will be presented by faculty and staff from the Volpe Library and Auxiliary Services. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of options to assist with textbook affordability and ways to make the book order process more seamless.

Fueled to Fly- FREE Coffee and Donuts
September 16th- FREE Coffee and Donuts in the CoE Student Success Center (CLEM 208)
“Fueled to Fly” is a monthly initiative that was launched in 2016 in the Clay N. Hixson Student Success Center. We provide FREE donuts and coffee, while supplies last, and encourage students to come meet and mingle with other engineering students, familiarize themselves with the center and services we offer, and get prepared for a great day of learning.

Purple Career Readiness Workshop on Sept. 16: Top Ten Tips
Join the Center for Career Development on Thursday, Sept. 16, beginning at 11 a.m. in Clement Hall 212 for this Purple Career Readiness Workshop. Russ Coughenour, the Director of the Center for Career Development, will share his top ten tips and advice on how to make the best impression possible at the approaching career fairs.
This event is open to all students in all majors and counts towards the Purple Career Readiness Certificate for junior and senior students. Bring your Eagle Card for a quick sign-in.

To receive credit for attending, you must log in with your Tennessee Tech email, participate if asked to during the workshop and be present for at least 80% of the presentation, and make sure that your camera is turned on during your attendance.

WTTU DJ training starts Tuesday, September 21 in RUC 369 at 11AM. Any student interested in starting a music or talk show is welcome to attend. Once training is complete, they will be eligible to start a show on 88.5 WTTU.

Family’s ties to area, belief in farming inspire gift to School of Agriculture
Joyce Glasscock Reece says her family’s history with the Upper Cumberland area dates back several hundred years. When she and her son, Edward, decided to sell their Cookeville home and use the proceeds to help others, Tech was the first place that came to mind.
The John Martin Reece Endowed Scholarship is named for Joyce’s father and is awarded to students majoring in agriculture at Tech, and the Nova Glasscock Endowed Scholarship is named for Joyce’s grandmother and is also awarded to agriculture majors.
The Reeces also established the College of Agriculture and Human Ecology Endowment which is used at the discretion of Dean Darron Smith. The CAHE used a portion of the funds to purchase a side-by-side four-person off-road work vehicle equipped with GPS technology for geomapping and grid soil sampling.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Dr. Mathew Pearson, University of Liverpool
Dr. Mathew Pearson, a nuclear physicist hailing from the University of Liverpool, is visiting campus this week and will give our first Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this semester. Dr. Pearson studies the properties of exotic nuclei using a laser to precisely measure atomic transitions that are affected by the configuration of the nucleus. His talk, Laser Spectroscopy in Nuclear Physics, will be this Friday, September 17th at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!
