Meet & Greet with Dr. Doreen Ketchens
You’re invited to a Meet & Greet with Dr. Doreen Ketchens on Friday, April 24, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Tech Pride Room (RUC 101). Hosted by Intercultural Affairs, this is a special opportunity to meet the “Queen of Clarinet,” known for blending traditional New Orleans jazz with contemporary influences. A performer, vocalist, and educator, she has appeared worldwide and leads engaging workshops.

Wrap Up the Semester at Eagle Fest 2026
Eagle Fest 2026: End of Semester Bash will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 on the Quad at Tennessee Tech University. The celebration kicks off at 11:00 AM with Esports & Interactive Gaming, brought to you by Rewired Fest, running until 3:00 PM. Food Trucks & Attractions will be available from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
The event is hosted by the Tennessee Tech Center for Student Engagement and the SOLO Events Committee.

Student Veteran Organization Glass Smash Event
This Wednesday on April 22nd, the Student Veteran Organization will be hosting our glass smash fundraising event in the Quad. This event will start around 8:30 am and finish at 4pm. Students and faculty are encouraged to stop by and take a swing smashing some glassware. Just in time for those finals frustrations.

Liquid Nitrogen Flower Smash Fundraiser- April 22
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be holding a fundraiser for Earth Week on Wednesday, April 22 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the LSC porch. You can buy a flower to freeze in liquid nitrogen and then smash it for some end of the semester stress relief! The event will go while supplies last. Questions can be sent to smacsttu@gmail.com.

Bamboo Cutlery Set Giveaway- April 21
Join the Student Members of the American Chemical Society in celebrating Earth Week with a giveaway of bamboo cutlery sets on Tuesday, April 21 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the south LSC atrium (by the periodic table sculpture). Each set contains a knife, fork, spoon, straw, straw brush, and chopsticks in a carrying case. The sets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Shawn Zeringue-Krosnick receives CAS Award for Research & Scholarly Activities
Shawn Zeringue-Krosnick of the Department of Biology is the recipient of the 2025-2026 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Research and Scholarly Activity. This award recognizes a significant research publication or creative project appearing during the previous two years and receiving expert critical review. The award recognizes Dr. Zeringue-Krosnick’s joint work with Dr. Kelly Moore of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to increase student knowledge and appreciation of plants and to immerse students in the use of herbaria as a resource of information about the natural world. Their work led to a paper in Plants People Planet.

This commemorative issue celebrates the 40th anniversary of the department and spotlights alumni through the decades, going back to the 1970s. Take a look and explore the stories behind the milestone.

Tony Lamantia receives Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award
Tony Lamantia, a senior pursuing a double major in Geoscience and Computer Science, is the recipient of the 2026 Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award. This is the highest student award given by the College of Arts and Sciences. In her award nomination letter, Dr. Jeannette Luna wrote that Tony, “is an exceptional student with a bright future as a creative thinker at the intersections of geoscience, geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and computer science.” Tony is recognized for completing a detailed geologic map of a lunar landing site, designing a project and leading a small team to map more than 90,000 boulders around the lunar south pole, and participating in a geospatial project mapping invasive rhododendron on the Isle of Raasay, Scotland. His work will result in two publications on which he is lead author.

Tech students compete in 2026 Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon
Tennessee Tech students and faculty competed in the 2026 Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon on April 12 in Florida. Participants included Clay Wesley (Business), Nolan Merchant (Business Management), Brayden Clark (Mechanical Engineering), Carson Hall (HR/Management), Davis Hesselrode (Finance), and Gracie Gore (Civil Engineering). Gracie won Female First Timers, Nolan placed top 10 Male First Timers, and Brayden took third in the 20–24 age group.

AI Month – ORNL Guest Speaker
The Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MInDS) Center is hosting Dr. Amir Sadovnik, Research Lead at the Center for AI Security Research (CAISER) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on Tuesday, 4/21 from 11 – 11:50 am in BRUN 228. He will be discussing “What do we mean when we talk about AI Safety and Security?” This event is open to everyone!
