    “I Heart Tech Students” Campaign Supports Students Affected by Mar. 3 Tornadoes

    On Mar. 10, Tennessee Tech kicked off the “I Heart Tech Students” fundraising campaign to raise money for programs that assist students during challenging times.  This has never been more evident than right now.  The Mar. 3 tornadoes affected many members of the Tennessee Tech family. The campaign will focus on raising funds for the Eagle Assistance Grant, Counseling Center, Accessible Education Center, Food Pantry, and Veterans Center.  All of these areas support students during tough times.     While many across the country have supported the Cookeville-Putnam County Tornado Relief Fund, alumni have also reached out to ask how they can help Tech students directly.     Are you interested in Co-op? Have you already accepted a Co-op position for summer 2020? Be sure you attend the FINAL Co-op Meetup of the semester in Brown Hall 236 at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 11.

    Any student interested in accepting a Cooperative Education position OR has already accepted a position with an employer will need to attend a Co-op Meetup. The Co-op Meetup will explain the eligibility guidelines for enrolling in the Cooperative Education Program, which went into effect July 1, 2019 for all students.

  • March Food Drive – Support P.A.T.H.

    March Food Drive – Support P.A.T.H.

    Hey Tech students!  During the month of March, Scholars United for the Homeless will be receiving canned food donations for Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (P.A.T.H.).  P.A.T.H. provides assistance to individuals with severe mental illnesses who are homeless or who are at imminent risk of losing their homes.  Donation boxes can be found on the main floor of the Roaden University Center.  This food drive will run through March 27, 2020.  If any questions, feel free to contact Jonathan Kelley at jpkelley42@students.tntech.edu.

    Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Dusty Henson, TTU Chemical Engineering

    TTU Chemical Engineering Major Dusty Henson will be giving the seminar this week. His talk, Negative Ion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Polyaromatic Anions: Radical Vibrational Structure and Gas-Phase Acidity Determination, will describe his study, via the technique of photoelectron spectroscopy, of a class of organic compounds that play a central role in both biochemistry and astrochemistry. The seminar will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! Visit the seminar webpage to see the full Spring 2020 schedule.

    College of Business Student Accepts Rural Reimagined Internship with UCDD

    TN Tech’s Rural Reimagined is proud to announce that Emily Buckner, a Human Resources major, has accepted an internship with the Upper Cumberland Development District (UCDD) and the Human Resources Agency (UCHRA). Through the internship, Emily will use her organizational and communication skills to collaborate on-site with UCDD’s leadership to identify and develop internships within the organization. This internship is a great way for Emily to become involved with Rural Reimagined and to gain real-world experience, while it will also create RR internships for other students in the future! UCDD’s Rebecca Smith states, “We are delighted about this new phase of our partnership with Tennessee Tech and look forward to creating new opportunities for students to further their education through hands-on learning.” She adds, “Collaboration through the Rural Reimagined Grand Challenge will make it possible for our agencies to recruit and develop highly qualified employees who are passionate about excellence and serving others.” Regarding her internship, Emily states, “This opportunity is not only going to benefit me in using my skills in a real-world environment but in return, I will be helping my fellow colleagues in their professional lives, one of the main goals I have for my career!” Stay tuned for updates on Rural Reimagined.   • Upper Cumberland Regional Science and Engineering Fair:General Volunteers Needed

    Looking for Volunteers: General Help

    The Oakley STEM Center is very excited to host the 65th Regional Science and Engineering fair on April 3rd, 2020. This year, we are already expecting over 200 students in the Senior division (9-12th grade) and will be hosting a middle school division with close to 100 students from our region. We are currently recruiting volunteers to help set-up the fair, direct students and families, and clean-up when everything is over. This is a great way for some of the Upper Cumberland’s best math, science, and engineering students to meet and interact with University students and faculty.

    The Science Fair itself will be held in the Hyder Burks Agriculture Pavilion from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 3, 2020. Help is also requested for set-up and clean-up.

    The Student Members of the American Chemical Society have rescheduled t-shirts sales for March 10-12 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the second floor of Foster Hall. This year’s shirt is the “Chemistry Eagle” shirt and is $15. We have limited stock of last year’s “two moles per liter” shirt that is $10. You can buy both shirts for $20. The “Chemistry Eagle” shirt is made on a soft style cotton shirt in heathered purple and the “two moles per liter” shirt is cotton in dark purple. We accept cash and cards. All funds raised go to supporting conference travel for students to present research and chapter outreach activites. Questions can be sent to acarroll@tntech.edu.

  • Northwestern Mutual at Society for the Advancement of Finance and Economics

    Join SAFE at our March 12 meeting as we host representatives from Northwestern Mutual, a financial services mutual organization that focuses in areas ranging from life insurance to finance planning. Northwestern Mutual is also home to one of the top internships in the nation, and they are currently filling spots for summer 2020.

    The meeting will be held in Johnson 310 during dead hour (11a.m.-12p.m.) on Thursday, March 12. Lunch will be provided.

    Last Co-op Meetup of the semester is Wednesday at 3pm in Brown Hall 236

    Did you accept a co-op position at the Engineering Fair last week or accept an internship requiring you to enroll in the Cooperative Education Program, such as the Disney College Program?

    Do not miss your last opportunity to learn the process needed for enrollment and to ensure you are meeting all eligibility requirements.  All students entering the Cooperative Education Program must meet the eligibility requirements, prior to being enrolled by the Cooperative Education Office:

      • Have a minimum overall 2.0 GPA (GPA must be maintained while participating in the program)

     

      • Be in good academic standing

     

      • Must have completed two grading cycles at the university

     

      • Pre-registration will be required for students entering the program after July 1, 2019

     

      • Must complete the Gold (freshman/sophomore) or Purple (junior/senior/gradate) Career Readiness Certification Program

     

      • Complete a Co-op Orientation appointment through Career Development

     

      • Maintain enrollment in the appropriate co-op course throughout the entire co-op assignment,

    including summer semesters

    The Tech Activities Board will be giving away Spring Break Bundles on Tues. Mar. 10th during dead hour at 11 am in the RUC lobby. The bundle includes a TAB frisbee, luggage tag, and Spring Break t-shirt. The first 500 students will receive their TAB gear before heading out for Spring Break!!

    Spilling The Tea on Consent

    Join the Peer Empowerment Program to talk about consent on Thursday, March 12 in TJ Farr 106 from 11-11:50! We’ll be watching the short video entitled “Tea and Consent” by Thames Valley Police. After the video, we will have a short discussion and Q&A. There will be two chances to see the video and be a part of the conversation- 11:10 and 11:35. Free food and drinks will be provided.
