“The Sky is Clear”, a BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition by Nobue Shinn, will be on view at the Appalachian Center for Craft Lakeview Gallery from April 27 to May 9, 2022. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday, 12 p.m., – 5 p.m. This exhibition showcases a series of quilts that follow the Hero’s Journey in a story written by Nobue.

Earth Week Water Bottle Give Away- April 21
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be giving away 24oz Nalgene water bottles and stickers in the LSC atrium (by Einstein’s) on Thursday, April 21 at 11 a.m. in honor of Chemists Celebrate Earth Week. Reduce your plastic footprint by switching disposable water bottles for reusable ones! The event will last until all of the water bottles are gone so arrive early to ensure you get one. COMFORT ZONE: Mary Klages Senior Thesis Exhibition
Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Clay
Mary Klages is a ceramic artist from Oak Ridge who has been working in the medium of clay for six years. Mary’s senior thesis show, “Comfort Zone”, will be at the Hilltop Gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, TN, April 27-May 10, 2022. This exhibition showcases Mary’s sculptural work, which she has created during her time in the BFA program at Tennessee Tech. This show consists of larger-than-life figures which explore the complexities of consciousness. This body of work combines both realistic and abstract forms while pushing the limit of clay as a medium. Mary finishes the pieces by layering paint to define the forms and push the narrative throughout the show. Mary aims to ignite curiosity in the viewer and invites them to investigate each piece closely.

Senior Thesis Exhibition for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass
Glass artist Stacey Ashworth will be presenting the opening of her senior thesis exhibition for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Glass. School of Art, Craft & Design, Tennessee Technological University. Join us in a spiritual realm of the cosmos for “TRANSFORMATION”. The show will be presented in the Joe L. Evins Gallery at the Appalachian Center for Craft, located at 1560 Craft Center Drive, Smithville, TN 37166. This is a free exhibition and will demonstrate the extensive efforts, and skills she has gained while attending the glass program at Tennessee Technological University. Focusing on hot shop glass blowing and the use of glass enamels. The exhibition will be presented to the public during the weeks of April 27, – May 10, 2022.

Mental Health Matters T-shirt Sale
In observance of April being Counseling Awareness Month and May being Mental Health Awareness month, the TN Tech Counseling Center and Student Government Association are partnering to sponsor the Mental Health Matters T-shirt Sale for support of the Patricia Smith Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to purse a degree in mental health counseling. 100% of the t-shirt sales support this scholarship. STEM Fab Friday events are focused on getting families and their children engaged in STEM activities. There are two regularly scheduled events each semester held on Fridays from 5-8 pm. We look forward to having families enjoy time together while exploring new STEM concepts through hands-on activities.

“Critical Struwwelpeter Theory” – April 20, 8.00 pm at the Backdoor Playhouse
On April 20th – an ominous date if you know your Austrian history – don’t miss your chance to meet the author of Der Struwwelpeter (1845), the oldest, bloodiest, and most controversial German children’s book of all times. Dr. Hoffmann and his attorney will face questions from superintendent Frau Schrecklich, the school board, and concerned parents in the audience, who want to keep German out of Kindergarten and ban this horrible book for good.
After two years of pandemic-related virtual content, German 2020 students happily return to the stage for the annual, QEP-sponsored theatrical production of “Der Struwwelpeter”.
Did you know that Mark Twain was not only fluent in German, but also provided one of the many English translations of Der Struwwelpeter? Did you know that The English Struwwelpeter was the first outstanding beneficiary of the first major convention on international copyright, concluded between Britain and Prussia in 1846? Did you know that there is a British Anti-Nazi propaganda version of the book, i.e. Hitlerstruwwelpeter, that Edward Scissorhands looks a lot like the kid on the cover, and that Rammstein wrote a song about one of the stories in the book? Well, now you know a fraction of what Germ2020 students have learned this semester.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Richard Mitchell (Physics)
We will have an Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this week featuring work from Physics Major Richard Mitchell. The talk, Integral method for fitting nuclear decay chains, will present a new technique for determining radioactive half-lives from complex, low-statistics data sets. The seminar will be this Friday, April 22nd at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend!
