Don’t miss this opportunity from Erin Bullington, Assistant Director of the Center for Career Development, to learn the basics behind being interviewed by an employer for a position for a job, internship, or co-op.

Survivor Speak Out – Share YOUR Story

Tuesday, 4/13, Jes Baker, The Social Impact of Body Love
Jes Baker is an author, speaker, body image and mental health coach, and advocate dedicated to shifting social paradigms to a place where all people are offered the opportunity to embrace themselves just as they are. She is internationally recognized for her writing on her blog “The Militant Baker,” and her books Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls and Landwhale. In her work, Baker highlights the importance of body autonomy, self-esteem, mental health, social justice, and diversity. This is a Center Stage event co-sponsored by the Commission on the Status of Women and the Women’s Center and takes place virtually at 6 pm on Tuesday, 4/13. To RSVP, click here.

A tribute to the music of Robert Jager
The School of Music at Tennessee Tech will present a special music program on Wednesday, April the 14th honoring the music of retired TTU Professor Robert Jager. In a “Tribute to the Music of Robert Jager” the Tuba/Euphonium Studio has prepared a program representative of some of the compositions Professor Jager created over the years he was on the faculty at TTU. During his thirty-year tenure at TTU, from 1971 to 2001, in addition to his many other award- winning compositions, influenced by his friendship with Professor Winston Morris, the tuba instructor at TTU, he felt motivated to and was commissioned to create many major works for the low brass instruments. The performance will consist of several major concertos accompanied by Kanako Reames on piano. The concert is free and is open to the public with limited seating at 7:30 p.m. in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building on the TTU campus. The program will also be live streamed and available through the School of Music Website.

Alpha Phi Omega Open Meeting
Alpha Phi Omega at Tennessee Tech invites all interested students to an open informational meeting on Tuesday, April 6 at 7:00 PM in the Laboratory Science Commons (room 1201) to learn more about our community service and leadership development opportunities. We are currently organizing to re-charter the Tau Epsilon chapter and encourage any interested student to join the organization and help build the local chapter from the ground up as a Founding Member.
Alpha Phi Omega is the largest intercollegiate community service organization in the United States, with chapters in Canada and the Phillippines. Alpha Phi Omega teaches students to engage in and organize community service projects through developing leadership skills and preparing career-ready graduates as members of the organization.

April 5 – 9 The Clothesline Project displayed
Witness and applaud these visual testimonies created by survivors of interpersonal violence from our campus and the local community. A collection of shirts decorated to represent survivors’ personal experiences with power-based violence will be displayed daily in the RUC lobby from 9-4 from April 5 through 9. Survivors may design a shirt during office hours at the Women’s Center. The Women’s Center and Project AWAKEN have created an additional virtual display, with different shirts, which is available here. Hope and healing hang on the clothesline!

Spanish for Beginners- 100% Online Summer Course
Do you want the skills you will need to thrive in a global society? If you answered yes, you should learn Spanish at Tennessee Tech!
SPAN 1020-541 (3 credits) will be offered this summer.
Dates: SPAN 1020= 6/28/2021 – 7/30/2021
Meeting: 100% Online
We will learn basic vocabulary and grammar and continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to be able to communicate in the Spanish language. We will also identify common beliefs and cultural practices in the Spanish-speaking world. Course activities will consist of reading, videos, asynchronous conversations, grammar exercises, and quizzes.
Taking SPAN 1010 offered during the first summer term and this class will also fulfill foreign language requirements you may have for your BA degree!

Grand Opening Celebration
Join us for a special event celebrating the opening of the largest buildings on Tennessee Tech University’s campus: the Laboratory Science Commons with the Stonecipher Lecture Hall and the Marc. L Burnett Student Recreation and Fitness Center!
Friday, April 9 we will celebrate these new facilities with events featuring outdoor activities, refreshments, commemorative giveaways and socially distanced tours.

New 4-way Stop at Stadium Dr and Wings Up Way
On Wednesday morning, 4/7/2021, the existing 2-way stop at the intersection of Stadium Dr and Wings Up Way will be converted to a 4-way stop. Traffic will remain open during this effort.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Geist Received Tolbert Research Award
Dr. Melissa J. Geist received the Tolbert Research Award to serve as PI for ESTAR Sano (Education, Support, Training, Awareness, and Resources) to mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19 on the Hispanic/Latinx population in the Upper Cumberland Region. The ESTAR team includes co-PI, Dr. Mark Groundland (Associate Professor of Foreign Languages-Spanish), Cary Cass, MSN, RN, CHSE, TESL (WHSON Lab Coordinator and former Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador), Adriana Montalvo (S1 Nursing Student), and Cesar Espinosa (J2 Nursing Student). They conducted educational workshops for over 100 people, provided hand sanitizer, masks, Lysol spray, antibacterial wipes, etc., and distributed 200-Spanish language laminated cards with information about COVID-19 at the recent RAM clinic. They hope to reach more people this year and to continue partnerships to provide education and resources for chronic diseases. The ESTAR team is grateful for the financial support provided by Rebecca Tolbert.

Like so many events in 2020-21, this year’s Wings Up Weekend will look a bit different with a smaller schedule and both in-person and virtual event options for alumni and friends. This year, both the Evening of Excellence Awards and the Legacy Gala, benefitting the Diversity Scholarship Initiative, will be held virtually, while the Appalachian Center for Craft will host its annual Celebration of Craft in person and online.
