Student Centered Learning

Student Centered Learning (SCL) is a teaching method broadly defined as a shift in the focus of instruction from the teacher to the student. In this interactive session, we will discuss how to implement student-centered learning in your courses and address both benefits and challenges of SCL. Microsoft MFA Transition Dates Announced
It’s Finally Time! The university is nearing completion of migrating to Microsoft’s Multi-Factor Authentication & Self-Service Password Reset system. The new system supports push notifications via an app, phone call, or text message for one-time passcode. We want to remind you to register two methods for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if you have not done so already. If you need to check to see if you have enrolled, you will want to go to the MS Info QuickLink in TechExpress.
The transition dates to the new method from the current IDme solution are:
- August 3rd – Faculty and Staff will be migrated to using Microsoft MFA.
- August 8th – Students will be migrated to using Microsoft MFA.
You will not be able to sign in to most of the applications without completing enrollment. For more information about this new system, visit https://go.tntech.edu/mfa for course links, how-to videos, and instructions. If you have questions, contact the IT Help Desk for more information.

Southeastern STEM Education Research Conference 2023 – Call for Proposals
Submit a proposal for the 17th Annual Southeastern STEM Education Research Conference.
The conference will take place on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14, 2023 on Tennessee Tech’s campus.
This event brings together great minds to engage in conversations about empirical studies in STEM education and their applications to practice in K–20 learning environments. Those who wish to contribute to the conference may submit a proposal at https://mtsuorsp.awardsplatform.com

New Associate Vice President of ITS
We are excited to announce the arrival on campus on July 25th of our new Associate Vice President of ITS, Mr. Brian Seiler. Mr. Seiler comes to campus with more than 17 years of experience in Information Technology, recently working at Princeton University. He received his B.A. in Psychology and Masters in Technology from Eastern Illinois. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Seiler to campus!

iLearn Semester Wrap-Up Summer 2022
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning for our next workshop session on Tuesday, July 26th at 11 AM. The end of the semester is the time to prepare iLearn courses for copying components to the next semester’s courses. This process involves updating Master iLearn courses, as well as cleaning up existing semester courses. In this session, we will discuss the exact procedures for adding, deleting, and modifying content topics, quizzes, assignments, discussions, and other iLearn components. The process of copying, exporting, and importing entire courses and between semesters is also explained in detail. Lastly, we will elaborate on the steps for selecting specific items to be copied as well as how to manage or offset start, end, and due dates. Chemistry Student Chance Morris Wins TENSOS Scholarship Competition
Chance Morris, a senior chemistry major with minors in biology and environmental studies, recently received the Student Scholarship Program Award from the Tennessee Environmental Network Show of the South (TENSOS) at their conference earlier this summer. TENSOS is a meeting for environmental professionals in the Southeast to meet and work together on tackling large environmental problems. Chance participated in a three round competition where he first submitted an abstract over his research project and was then invited to submit a poster over his work in the second round. He was one of the finalists to be invited to the third round of the competition to present his poster in person and give a short presentation at the TENSOS conference. Chance received one of two scholarships awarded at the meeting, and was the only undergraduate recipient. Chance conducts environmental chemistry research with Dr. Amanda Carroll working to remediate heavy metal contaminants from water sources.

Assistant Professor VanNeste receives patent
Assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering Charles VanNeste recently received a patent for an omnidirectional sensing device that can help determine an object’s change in position, velocity or speed, which is important in fields ranging from robotics systems to electric vehicles. Other sensing devices are available in the market, but most require numerous sensing components and large amounts of energy. They are also expense, and few are omnidirectional. VanNeste also recently published a manuscript for this work, available online (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9827944), in the IEEE Sensors Journal. The Office of Sponsored Programs congratulates Assistant Professor VanNeste on this achievement.

Women in Higher Education Drive-in Workshop Invitation
Join us for the upcoming Women in Higher Education Tennessee (WHET) workshop that will take place on TTU’s campus on Friday, August 12. TTU is honored to host the event in the new Sciences Building. This gives us a chance to showcase our campus to other women across the state. The program begins at 10:00 and concludes at 2:00. The ‘timely’ theme of the event is “Leading Out of a Crisis” with keynote speaker Dr. Lori Bruce. Additional speakers include Susan Wells J.D., and Cigi England. There is no registration fee to attend and a catered lunch is provided. This workshop is open to the entire campus community including faculty, staff, administrators and students. Designing Assessments
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning on Tuesday, July 19th at 11 AM for our next workshop session, Designing Assessments. Assessments are a tool designed to help measure student mastery of course outcomes and objectives. In this workshop, we will review the types of assessments as well as the purpose and reasoning behind implementing effective assessments in your courses. We have a new delivery of tomatoes and produce available for purchase from Oakley Farm! This week, we have Big Beef, Cherokee Purple, Sungold and Roma tomatoes available for $2 per pound. We also have cucumbers available for pickup, two for $1. We can accept cash and check payments. Pick up produce in Oakley Hall room 102. Educational discount forms may be submitted to Human Resources by Thursday, July 14, 2022.
The first day to register for a course at Tech if you are using a fee waiver is July 21, 2022.
Please submit forms before 08/05/2022 to ensure processing before the confirmation deadline. Forms are processed in the order they are received.
Tennessee Tech fee payment/enrollment confirmation deadline for Fall Term is August 16, 2022.
Tennessee Tech Fall Term classes begin Thursday, August 18, 2022.TN eCampus classes begin Monday, August 22, 2022.

Veteran’s Service-Connected Disability Leave
Effective July 1, 2022
In accordance with State of Tennessee House Bill 1578, Tennessee Tech University made the following addition to TTU Policy 617 – Family, Medical, and Service Member Leave, Section IV., E., 3.
A Tennessee Tech employee who is a veteran with a service-connected disability of thirty percent (30%) or more receives thirty-six (36) hours of leave each year that can be used to attend appointments related to the service-connected disability. However, no unused leave remaining at the end of the year may not be carried to the subsequent year.

OER training and stipend opportunity
Provost Bruce is funding an OER (Open Educational Resources) program to save students money on textbooks. This program continues last year’s TBR grant work, which saved students over $162,000 in Spring 2022. This OER program offers stipends to selected faculty to transition their courses from traditional textbooks to zero-cost course materials. This program will help increase equity in access to quality, zero-cost educational materials. Faculty interested in receiving OER training and a stipend must submit an application proposal by Aug. 31, 2022. Attention GAs: Tax Implications-’22 SU
Financial Aid is now sending a listing of the tuition benefits paid each semester on the behalf of Support GAs to the Payroll/Business Office. This will increase taxable income and possibly the federal income tax deduction. If you do not have enough gross pay to cover the tax calculated, then no tax will be deducted. This amount does not increase your net pay. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dustin Agee in Payroll at extension X3041.
Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d). These assistantships do not qualify for the $5,250 exclusion.
