Student Affairs Student Spotlight – Rebecca Firth
Congratulations Rebecca Firth on being named this month’s Student Affairs Student Spotlight, an honor bestowed upon her because of her inspiring leadership and decorated academic career. Rebecca is a senior Pure Chemistry Major with Minors in Music Performance and Astronomy who hails from Kingsport, Tennessee. She excels as a student, as evident through her receiving the Kurt Eisen Excellence in Liberal Arts Award in 2022 from the College of Arts and Sciences and the multiple research projects that she has collaborated on. Impressively, this research has resulted in two publications within The Journal of Physical Chemistry A. She has succeeded not only in the classroom but outside as well. Rebecca is a member of the Tennessee Technological University Flute Organization and the American Chemical Society, or ACS. Rebecca has proven herself as a leader by holding many positions within ACS, including President, for which she has been recognized by being awarded the Leadership Development Award in 2022 from ACS. She plans to use her strong leadership capabilities in her future career as a professor in Chemistry, a path she will further pursue by attaining a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Mississippi. Rebecca’s strong character, proficiency in leadership, and affinity for scholarship perfectly exemplify the attributes of a Golden Eagle, making her an excellent selection for this month’s Student Affairs Student Spotlight.

Congratulations Dr. Mustafa Rajabali – Award for Innovative Teaching
Dr. Mustafa Rajabali of the Department of Physics is a recipient of the 2023 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Innovative Teaching. This award recognizes a recent significant innovation in undergraduate teaching. Dr. Rajabali is recognized for his project-based learning techniques that incorporate creative inquiry and group work.
Dr. Rajabali requires students to develop a one-sentence question about a topic in the Physics course and to propose, develop and conduct an experiment using children’s toys to test the hypothesis in their question. He has further refined and expanded this form of creative inquiry to more advanced classes with great success.
These approaches to teaching are designed to assist students in understanding and applying complex theories and to prepare them for advanced courses, working with a team, and future careers.
Congratulations Dr. Rajabali and thank you for all that you do for students!

Getting Real About Sex Trafficking in Our Community Informational
Tech ASPIRES is hosting TBI Agent Kevin Reagan to quell current-held ideas and myths individuals have about sex trafficking. You will learn the cleverer ways traffickers lure their victims and how TTU and our community are affected.

Community invited to ‘Celebrate ’ at Tennessee Tech
Tennessee Tech’s Department of Computer Science welcomes the community to an event for its graduating students, alumni and anyone interested in computer science.
“Celebrate <C/S>” is April 25, 6-8 p.m., in Bruner Hall 119 and 228.
“This is a time to celebrate our computing community,” department chair Gerald Gannod, Ph.D., said. “Spring commencement is near, so we want to recognize and honor our students who are graduating as well as reconnect with our computer science alumni. A lot has changed in our growing department over the past few years, and we want to share our student and faculty successes.”
Highlights include the unveiling of graphic designs created for the CS department by Tennessee Tech graphic design senior Rebecca Hahnert, hors d’oeuvres, a string quartet, and opportunities to meet computer science students, professors and alumni.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Sydney Beltran, TTU Earth Sciences
Please join us this Friday for an Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar given by Sydney Beltran from TTU’s Department of Earth Sciences. Sydney has been studying the geology of Mars using the HiRISE instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. By comparing features observed on Mars to features found on Earth, Sydney is able to probe Mars’ paleoclimate transition from “warm and wet” to “cold and dry”. Sydney’s talk, Svalbard Terraced Fan-Delta as a Terrestrial Analog for Tyras Vallis’ Fan-Delta, Xanthe Terra Mars, will be this Friday at 4pm in Bruner Hall 210. (Snacks will be served starting at 3:30pm.) These seminars are geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are encouraged to attend! Math Department – Integration Bee
April 13th saw the return of the Math Department’s Integration Bee. After an online qualifying round, 9 students participated in person for the first place prize of $125. The first round knocked 7 students out of the competition. This left 2 students vying for first place. Third place went to Isaiah Chastain, a freshman computer engineering major from Dickson, TN. The final integrand of the day was exp(x) sinh(x). After a failed, but valiant effort from Charles Hasting of Maryville, top prize was claimed by Logan Schenk, a mechanical engineering major from Shelbyville, TN.
