Cohen and Talbert Use Cross Disciplinary Collaboration in Conservation Efforts
Knoxville media recently published news describing the practical conservation impacts of working across disciplines. Dr. Brad Cohen’s lab in Biology and Dr. Doug Talbert’s lab in Computer Science are working together to monitor and restore one of the flagship birds of the Southeast – the bobwhite quail.
Cohen’s graduate student, Mateo Gannod, developed a detector that uses artificial intelligence to identify when and where bobwhite quail calls are occurring. Devices were placed in grassland areas to record ambient sounds. The new AI device identifies quail calls from thousands of hours of these recordings. This technology will allow researchers to better monitor this increasingly rare but important gamebird.

Arts and Sciences Open Educational Resources Program Awardees
The Open Educational Resources Program (OER), made available by Academic Affairs, is designed to save students money on textbooks. OER supports faculty to transition courses from traditional textbooks to zero-cost course materials. Students have saved students over $320,000 since OERs inception in Fall 2021.
Arts and Sciences faculty who received the award for Spring 2024 are Lori Maxwell (Chair, Sociology & Political Science), Jennifer Gray (Assistant Professor, English), Clark Carlton (Associate Professor, Sociology & Political Science), Andrew Hetzel (Associate Professor, Math) and Troy Brachey (Senior Instructor, Math).

Human Ecology Students Receive $250 Grant to Help Women’s Shelter
Sarah Dickenson and Kathryn Dye, two Human Ecology students and leaders in the Child and Family Sciences (CFS) Club, were recently awarded a $250 grant from Upper Cumberland Council on Children and Youth (UCCCY). The pair, empowered by financial support from UCCCY, provided period supplies to the Genesis House, a local domestic violence shelter. Their objective was to ensure that shelter residents have access to the necessary period supplies and to reduce the shelter’s financial burden, as well as provide a sense of dignity and security to those in need. The supplies included pads and liners and were delivered on Wednesday, December 6th. Submissions for Non-Instructional Faculty Assignments due Jan. 16
Proposals from faculty seeking non-instructional faculty assignments for the 2023-2024 academic year are due to department chairs on Jan. 16, 2024. The purpose of the non-instructional assignments are: to contribute to the professional growth of the faculty; to improve the teaching and the curriculum across the University; and/or to enhance the scholarship and academic excellence of the University in ways that cannot be accomplished under the constraints of the regular workload assignments. Proposals are due to Academic Affairs by January 26, 2024. The recipients will be announced on February 22, 2024. Tennessee Tech Physics Students Win National Recognition
The Tennessee Tech chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won an Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS National Office. The chapter has been recognized for its excellence as a top-tier student-led physical sciences organization, a designation given to fewer than 10 percent of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the world.
Tennessee Tech’s SPS chapter is advised by Professor Adam Holley and is led by student officers. The 2022-2023 officers are Mateo Cacheiro, Ethan White and Michael Potts (physics majors), and Emma Krebs (math major).
Dr. Holley stated, “This recognition is a high honor for Tennessee Tech University and for science achievement at the higher education level in Tennessee!”

Spring Showcase, an event for Fall ’24 admitted students, will take place Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 2. The deadline for submitting requests is Friday, Feb. 2.

Smith for his proposal “Tennessee Rural Crime Digital Project.”

Tech Basketball Hosts Southeast Missouri in Doubleheader
Your Golden Eagles will be competing at the Hooper Eblen Center on Saturday, January 13 as they host the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State. The women’s game will tip off at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men’s at 3:00 p.m.
It’s We Back Pat Day! Pat Summitt was widely known for her success as a head women’s basketball coach at Tennessee coaching 38 seasons with an overall record of 1,098-208. Join us in honoring the late Pat Summitt in her fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
There will also be a special performance by the Capshaw Jump Rope team at halftime of the women’s game! All Tech students receive FREE admission to home events!

AVP of Facilities and Business Services
We are excited to announce that Mr. Dan Warren has been appointed as the AVP of Facilities & Business Services. Dan started working at Tech 8 years ago as a project manager in Capital Projects and then moved to Facilities Engineer. Prior to coming to Tech, Dan worked as a maintenance and reliability engineer at Arnold Air Force Base. Dan has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Tech and a master’s degree in engineering management from the University of TN .
Dan has served as interim AVP for Facilities during our two most recent searches for an AVP for Facilities. Please join us in welcoming Dan into his new role as AVP for Facilities.

Building Closures for Holiday Break
The University Police would like to remind everyone that all campus buildings will be secured on Thursday, December 21st at the end of business day until Tuesday, January 2nd when offices re-open from the Holiday break.
