First Speech & Debate Practice of the Semester
The Speech and Debate Team will be having their first practice of the semester on Monday, August 23rd at 6:30 pm in Henderson 004. Everyone is welcome! Our team often boasts a variety of majors and years and you could be part of that! No speech and debate practice experience required; we will teach you! This first practice will be a great opportunity to show any interest in the team, find out information, and ask questions. If you can’t make it to this practice, but you’re interested in finding out more, we practice every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 PM in Henderson 004.

2nd Annual WCTE PBS Downtown Film Festival on Cookeville’s West Side August 28th
Tennessee Tech’s iCube is working with our local PBS station, WCTE, to host this festival. General admission and VIP passes for all-inclusive access are now available at www.downtownfilm.org. Group discounts and couple package options are available.
There will be unique viewing experiences with illuminated, diverse films by independent filmmakers on West Side buildings, screenings of competition winners, and discussions with Emmy award-winning journalist and filmmaker Demetria Kalodimos. Also, a workshop will be held with Los Angeles feature film future tech designer, Darby Faccinto, and a location scout walking tour with Sydney Lunn, scout director for The Green Mile film and Nashville television series.
Come join us for a fun-filled day on the West Side while celebrating the best in nonfiction filmmaking!

Social Justice Histories: Intersection of Art, Technology and History
Center Stage presents Dr. Khoi Nguyen: Bringing Social Justice and Histories to Life with Augmented and Virtual Realities at 4 p.m., Thursday, August 19, in Ray A. Morris STEM Center Auditorium. A hands-on workshop will be held at 11 a.m., before the event in the same location.
Khoi Nguyen’s path in life lay witness to inequality, the need for social justice and gratitude for the labors of those who fought before him. Thousands of fingerprints in the images of Harvey Milk and Barack Obama form a collective identity of marginalized sectors of societies. Using A.I., Augmented and Virtual Reality, the audience can explore the stories behind these fingerprints and get a sense of the enormous gravity it took to move the scales of equality.

Postage Rates Increasing Aug. 29
The USPS has approved a mid-year rate increase for letter mail, postcards and flats that will go into effect on Aug. 29.
The deadline to mail packages at the current rates through our on-campus mail room will be Aug. 27, at 2pm.

Films on Demand Ending; AVON Now Available
We have made a change in our library video collections:

- Effective immediately, we have access to AVON (Academic Video Online) via our Databases A-Z list:

Access to Films on Demand (FOD) ends October 30, 2021.
AVON is a collection of over 66,000 videos across multiple disciplines. It is searchable and browsable with filters for subject, publisher, language, release date, etc. AVON content is also discoverable in EagleSearch. We made this change because FOD usage has been declining, and AVON has more titles.
If you use a FOD video in your class, you will have access only until October 30, 2021. Check AVON for the same video or an alternative to use instead. You may also look in Kanopy and request that we purchase a video at $150 for one year of access, but please check AVON before requesting a Kanopy video to avoid duplication. This event will be held on University Drive (behind the RUC) on Wednesday, August 18, from 4 PM to 7 PM. The Mix and Mingle is a great opportunity to become involved and engaged on campus. Chemistry TAs Needed
The Department of Chemistry at TTU is seeking students to serve as TAs for the upcoming semester. In order to serve as a TA, students must have: 1) Completed the course you wish to serve as a TA for (CHEMs 1010, 1020, 1110, 1120, 3010, 3020) with a “B” or better and 2) have a GPA of 3.0 or above. You must also be eligible to work in the US.

Students who are selected as TAs will receive hourly compensation, and will generally be assigned one three-hour lab section a week, grading duties, and potentially be asked to attend weekly meetings regarding upcoming laboratory activities.

TTU Men’s Soccer Club Tryouts
Did you play soccer growing up? Would you like to continue your soccer career in a fun but competitive environment? Come tryout for the Tennessee Tech Men’s Soccer Club (TTUMSC)! We are a competitive club team that plays in Region 2 of the NIRSA conference against other schools like UTK, MTSU, and Vanderbilt. We are looking to build on the successes of our previous seasons while also looking to rebuild our squad depth.
Tryouts will be held on Wednesday, August 18th from 7-9PM while callbacks will be Thursday, August 19th from 7:30-9PM. These will both be on Field 1 of the Putnam County Sports Complex (497 Whiteaker Springs Rd, Cookeville, TN 38506).

New Reserved Parking Added to Derryberry Lot
The Derryberry parking lot is undergoing some changes for the 2021-22 school year. This year employees have the opportunity to purchase one of 15 reserved parking spaces located in front of Derryberry for an annual rate of $700. The reserved spots will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have already requested and/or received your 2021-22 permit, you are still eligible to request one of the reserved spots and any monies already paid for a permit will be applied to your new selection.
Please keep in mind all general parking policies apply to these permit holders including the following:
- One permit per person – permits cannot be shared
- This permit will allow individuals to park in any valid parking spot in Gold, Purple, and Red zones on campus (excluding Green and Teal zone, and visitor or other reserved spaces such as facilities or police parking)
- In the event that the lot in front of Derryberry is closed for any reason, permit holders will need to find an alternative parking spot
In order to request one of the reserved spots, this form (click here) will open on Thursday, Aug. 12, at noon. Parking and Transportation Services will contact the first 15 respondents via their Tennessee Tech email with instructions for securing their permit. If the office does not receive a timely response, they will move on to the next person who has submitted the form.

TN Tech Featured for Hosting Successful Hybrid 3D Delivery of Boys State Program
The Tennessee American Legion Boys State program, which is hosted by Dean of Student’s Office on Tennessee Tech’s campus every year, was recently featured by MootUp for using an innovative hybrid delivery method utilizing their 3D virtual platform. Due to COVID-19, this year’s 5-day leadership and citizenship program was developed in an online 3D virtual world that allowed delegates to participate in highly interactive experiences such as campaigning for mock government elections, earning points for city competitions, and building relationships with other high school students across the state. Tennessee Tech staff from several departments helped make this program a success by working as Senior Counselors. From the Boys State headquarters located in the RUC Multipurpose room, Senior Counselors interacted with the delegates virtually (via avatar and video) to provide guidance and support throughout the week. Many local and state government officials also participated in the program by providing educational presentations and interactions with the delegates.
In addition to a successful hybrid program, Mr. Jake Officer was elected Boys State Governor and chosen to represent the Tennessee program at Boys Nation in Washington, D.C.
