Computer Science Graduate Club Picnic Spring 2022
We are inviting you all to our computer science graduate club picnic for the spring 2022 semester on April 20, Wednesday, 6 PM – 8 PM (CDT) at RUC 282, multipurpose room. We have planned to farewell our computer science department’s graduating students (MS/Ph.D.) who will be graduating in the Spring 2022 or Summer 2022 semester.
Free food, drinks, and dessert will be provided! (Halal and Vegetarian-friendly as well) There will be all kinds of food and also you can take food home in case you are fasting 🙂
This event is open to the public!! We welcome your family, children, and friends who are not tech students as well!

“Critical Struwwelpeter Theory” – April 20, 8.00 pm at the Backdoor Playhouse
On April 20th – an ominous date if you know your Austrian history – don’t miss your chance to meet the author of Der Struwwelpeter (1845), the oldest, bloodiest, and most controversial German children’s book of all times. Dr. Hoffmann and his attorney will face questions from superintendent Frau Schrecklich, the school board, and concerned parents in the audience, who want to keep German out of Kindergarten and ban this horrible book for good.
After two years of pandemic-related virtual content, German 2020 students happily return to the stage for the annual, QEP-sponsored theatrical production of “Der Struwwelpeter”.
Did you know that Mark Twain was not only fluent in German, but also provided one of the many English translations of Der Struwwelpeter? Did you know that The English Struwwelpeter was the first outstanding beneficiary of the first major convention on international copyright, concluded between Britain and Prussia in 1846? Did you know that there is a British Anti-Nazi propaganda version of the book, i.e. Hitlerstruwwelpeter, that Edward Scissorhands looks a lot like the kid on the cover, and that Rammstein wrote a song about one of the stories in the book? Well, now you know a fraction of what Germ2020 students have learned this semester.

Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar: Richard Mitchell (Physics)
We will have an Undergraduate STEM Research Seminar this week featuring work from Physics Major Richard Mitchell. The talk, Integral method for fitting nuclear decay chains, will present a new technique for determining radioactive half-lives from complex, low-statistics data sets. The seminar will be this Friday, April 22nd at 4pm in Volpe Library 248. It will be geared for undergraduates from any STEM major, but graduate students and faculty are also encouraged to attend! TN National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) Annual Conference
The Tennessee chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) is issuing a call for proposals for the chapter’s 2nd annual conference, to be held July 15, 2022, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee. We invite traditional presentations, panel discussions, and poster presentations on research, scholarly, classroom, or community activity related to our conference theme. Professional Privilege Tax 2022
For the tax year beginning on June 2, 2022 and ending June 1, 2023, an occupations tax is imposed on those persons with an Active Tennessee license or registration to practice any of the following professions:
Attorney
Agent(Securities)
Broker-Dealer
Investment Adviser
Lobbyist
Osteopathic Physician
PhysicianFifteen professions have been removed from the tax beginning June 1, 2020. See Professional Privilege Tax for a complete list of professions that were required to pay for 2020 and thereafter. This tax is imposed without regard to whether the profession is actually practiced in the state of Tennessee. (TCA, Section 67-4-1702).
TCA 67-4-1709 provides for a governmental entity to remit the tax on behalf of its eligible employees. The amount of tax will be included as additional compensation on each affected employee’s W-2.
TTU must report to the Department of Revenue the names and professions of eligible employees no later than June 1, 2021. Those eligible must currently be in an active status in their profession.
Please provide the names and professions of anyone in your area of responsibility to me at dagee@tntech.edu or Gaile Palmer at gpalmer@tntech.edu at your earliest convenience, but not later than May 15, 2022. I will compile a master list to transmit to the State.

The University Orchestra performs “Drums and Rock n Roll”
The University Orchestra, under the direction of Prof. Dan Allcott, will perform its final concert of the year “Drums and Rock n Roll” on Tuesday evening April 19th at 7:30 p.m. at the Bryan Fine Arts Center. Allcott will also appear as electric cello soloist in a special arrangement of “Crazy Train”, the rock song made famous by Ozzy Osbourne on his solo debut album in 1980. In addition to the string section, Allcott will receive backing from a rhythm section featuring freshman bass player Sam Woerdeman and senior percussionist Jazzy Jones.
The concert will open with the “Drumroll” Symphony by Austrian composer Franz Josef Haydn written in 1795. “Like Crazy Train, the Haydn symphony is a lot of fun, and will include some special work on Timpani by Jazzy Jones, and a spritely violin solo in the slow movement played by our concertmaster, Aniza Moore” says Allcott.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The University Orchestra is an all-student ensemble featuring music majors and students from the general student population across the campus who have experience performing on orchestral instruments. For more information contact Professor Allcott at dallcott@tntech.edu
