SCHOLAR MENTOR AWARD
Nominate a Faculty Member for Scholar-Mentor Award
- The University established the Scholar-Mentor Award to honor TTU’s long history of close relationships between faculty and their students. The award honors a faculty member who displays outstanding mentorship, integrating scholarship, research and teaching excellence. The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2021-22 Scholar Mentor Award is Friday, November 12, 2021. Complete guidelines and the nomination form are contained on the Office of Research’s home page at the link below. Please send the forms to Jill Dicey at jdicey@tntech.edu.

PTC Live Speaker from NBC
On Thursday, October 14th, at 11:00, the Tennessee Tech Professional and Technical Communications Club is hosting a live speaker over Zoom. The speaker, Jenny Smith, is a marketing director at the NBC affiliate in Memphis and will speak to Tech students about possible jobs and internships in broadcasting. She has been assigned to a committee to find out ways to effectively recruit college students for TV broadcasting. Jenny’s presentation will cover several topics relating to the TV broadcasting industry including marketing, engineering, sales, and news. The topics Jenny will cover are applicable to almost any major. Jenny’s presentation is not merely informational, as she is currently searching for new interns and employees. Attend and you may find a new, exciting job. After Jenny’s presentation students will have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. Trombone Recital Thursday, October 14
On Thursday, October 14th, Dr. Joshua Hauser will present a faculty recital at 7:30p.m. in Wattenbarger Auditorium. Dr. Hauser’s program includes works by Charles Gounod, Jennifer Higdon, Arthur Pryor, Steven Verhelst, Maurice Ravel, and Sammy Nestico. Dr. Hauser will be joined in collaboration by Paul Thurmond, piano and Preston Light, tuba.
Dr. Hauser’s recital is dedicated to Sammy Nestico and all of those who we have lost in the last year. For those who are unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available through the School of Music website.

Socktober – New Socks for the Homeless
Research shows that the number one requested item among the homeless population is new socks. TN Tech Residential Life’s Tech Wars Committee is partnering with the University Service Center to collect brand new socks for the month of October. The halls are competing to see who can collect the most.
These new socks will be donated to the Cookeville Police Department, PC Sherriff’s Department, Independence Again, Rescue Mission and other organizations that work with Cookeville’s homeless population.
If you are interested in donating to this cause, you can bring your donation by to the University Service Center, RUC 119 (just beside the information desk on the first floor, in the lobby)
We will collect for the entire month of October, so bring them in before the 31st.

2020-2021 Wings Up 100: College of Interdisciplinary Studies
The following researcher in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies has been inducted into the 2020-2021 Wings Up 100.
- Hayden Mattingly, professor, School of Environmental Studies
The 2020-2021 Wings Up 100 roster is an elite group of 38 Tech researchers who brought in at least $100,000 in external funding for their research and activities during 2020-2021.
Congratulations to these researchers who helped Tech set a new high in external funding.

Dr. Colleen Mestayer has been at Tennessee Tech for the last 5 years where she teaches a variety of communication courses including Teamwork, Interpersonal Communication, Research Methods, and several courses in the new Event Planning Minor.

Welcome Back Annual Golden Helix 5K Race
Sign up now for the Golden Helix 5k Race at www.goldenhelix5k.com! We are happy to announce the return of an in-person race being held on Saturday October 30th at 9:00 a.m. This year will welcome a newly certified route with the start/finish right outside the beautiful new Stonecipher Lecture Hall, located at the corner of Peachtree Ave. and Wings Up Way (W. 8th St.). Sign up by Oct. 12th for a guaranteed t-shirt! Current TTU students have been SOLO-sponsored to run the race for free using the registration code “TTU Student”. The College of Graduate is excited to announce the annual Halloween door/office decorating contest! Please join us in on the fun again this year! Small Group Instructional Diagnostic (SGID) Consultations are now available for Fall 2021! You can book your session any time between October 13-22, 2021. A Small Group Instructional Diagnostic (SGID) is a simple and straightforward evaluation process that uses structured small group discussions among students to provide confidential feedback to the instructor around the midpoint of a term. The benefit of incorporating a SGID into your course is that it allows you to receive feedback before the end of the term, so you can begin making adjustments. Don’t miss this opportunity to get feedback on your course and improve your end of course IDEA student evaluations.

A History of Desegregation at Tennessee Tech University
Are you curious about when and how Tennessee Tech began racial desegregation? Check out the Tech Archives’ latest exhibit on the main floor of Volpe Library! “A History of Desegregation at Tennessee Tech University” interprets the context and early decades of Black students and employees at Tech, and connects their efforts with the activism of Black students today.
The exhibit includes a display of library books that cover themes in the exhibit. These books are available to be checked out or read in the library.
