Tennessee Tech’s English Department presents Hughie at the Playhouse
TN Tech’s English Department presents the Kurt Eisen Essential Playwright Series Production — Hughie — by Eugene O’Neill and directed by Joe Clark on February 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, 2021 at 8:00 p.m.; February 18, at 10:00 p.m.; and, February 20, at 2:00 p.m. with streaming performances on February 22 and 23.https://www.showtix4u.com/events

THE STORY: Hughie is one of Eugene O’Neill’s last works. It was originally intended as part of a series of short plays, but it became the lone survivor when O’Neill destroyed the others. Set in the lobby of a seedy Time Square hotel early one morning, the characters are the hotel’s gray, withdrawn night clerk and “Erie” Smith, a penny-ante gambler who has spent most of his last fifteen years at the hotel between periods of drunkenness.

Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremonies
Planning is underway for the Spring 2021 commencement ceremonies. We are excited to announce the change to two outdoor ceremonies in Tucker Stadium. Outdoor ceremonies help us meet several important expectations from graduates. Our May ceremonies must still follow COVID-19 safety protocol. Our number of spring graduates is so large, we would have to limit the number of guests if we stayed indoors. We would also have to hold ceremonies over a two-day period because of the capacity in Hooper Eblen Center under COVID-19 protocol. Commencement in Tucker Stadium allows us host ceremonies in a beautiful setting with plenty of room for family and friends.
Please note the date is now Friday, May 7. Ceremony times will be at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. All candidates are required to RSVP for their ceremony by April 19.

This semester, we are reading Know My Name by Chanel Miller, an immersive memoir of Miller’s highly publicized sexual assault by Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner, the high-profile court case, and its aftermath. “So, You Think You Can iLearn” is a play on the reality dance competition television program called So You Think You Can Dance. Instead of busting a move on a stage, we are looking for faculty members who have built effective courses in iLearn and are ready to share their design strategies.

Purple Career Readiness Workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 16: What Employers Look for
Join the Center for Career Development on Tuesday, Feb. 16, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Roaden University Center Multipurpose Room (2nd floor) for this Purple Career Readiness Workshop. Mr. Eric Hyche, Tech Alumnus and Senior iOS Engineer at Noom, Inc., will be navigating through the expectations that employers hold when conducting virtual interviews with potential candidates.
This event is open to all students in all majors and counts towards the Purple Career Readiness Certificate for junior and senior students. Bring your Eagle Card for a quick sign-in.

Reminder of Scholastic Research Award deadline of Feb. 28
Applications for the Scholastic Research Award must be submitted electronically in a single PDF to sstorie@tntech.edu on or before Feb. 28, 2021. The Scholastic Research Award, presented by the University Research Advisory Committee, is a university-wide award for a single, significant and innovative work produced, published, performed or exhibited from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020. Two awards, of $1,500 each, are available each year, with one reserved for tenure-track faculty and the other reserved for tenured faculty. For complete application requirements, please visit the Office of Research website, and select the section for the Scholastic Research Award.

Computer Science Grad Student Seminar on Feb 11
The Computer Science Graduate Student Club is back with the Spring 2021 Seminar Series. Andrew McDole, a Computer Science MS student, is going to hold the first seminar, where he will be talking about “Cloud Malware Detection using Deep Learning.” Andrew will be presenting over the following MS Teams session on Thursday, Feb 11 from 3 – 4 PM.
