  • GA Tax Implications: Summer 2021

    Attention GAs: Tax implications on graduate assistantships

    The Office of Graduate Studies and the Office of Financial Aid is now sending a listing of the tuition benefits paid each semester on your behalf to the Payroll/Business Office. For some assistantships the amount will be added to the taxable income on your July 30th paycheck and will increase your tax liability and possibly your federal income tax deduction. This amount does not increase your net pay.
    If you want to change your W-4 to prevent or lessen the withholding amount, the form is here. This form must be returned to the Payroll Office by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 16th, to process on the July 30th paycheck.

    Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
    Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d).

  • Free Fitness Class

    TCRI Receives USDA Grant for Second Season of “It’s Your Business”

    Rural Reimagined recognizes and congratulates the Center for Rural Innovation and Director Michael Aikens for receiving a $100,000 USDA Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG), which will fund a second season of “It’s Your Business with Michael Aikens.” This PBS television series extends Aiken’s mission to tell the stories of rural communities and businesses through their voices, with the goal being to foster rural business emergence, creation, and resilience. Through USDA funding, the television series will continue to bring attention to challenges that our surrounding rural communities face, in addition to raising awareness of available small business resources while broadcasting and facilitating the emergence, creation, and resilience of rural businesses and entrepreneurship in our region. Aikens states, “My goal is to shed light on the amazing stories of resilience and innovation exhibited by the small businesses in our Upper Cumberland region.” Wings up!

    Since the implementation of the Grand Challenge: Rural Reimagined in March 2019, over $3 million in rural-related grants have already been activated. As the Fall 2021 semester approaches, Rural Reimagined wants to recognize all TN Tech faculty who have or are currently working on rural-related projects, coursework, or research. If you have received a rural-related grant, are working on any rural-related proposals or research, or plan to have rural-related objectives in your coursework, please email Kinsey Potter at sw-kbpotter@tntech.edu so that we can recognize your work in supporting the success of our surrounding rural areas.     Golden Eagle father thanks Coach Polk Brown with gift to golf program

    Darren Bassel says his son Alexander is in good hands at Tennessee Tech.

    Thanks to the university’s reputation and Head Golf Coach Polk Brown, Bassel recently made a generous gift to support Tech’s golf program.

    “When you’re a dad and your son is going to play college golf, you want to make sure the coach is a mentor, not only with athletics but also with academics,” said Bassel. “Coach Brown is that mentor. And Tennessee Tech is a great academic school.”

    Donor support allows TTU Athletics to maintain and upgrade the Golden Eagle Golf Club, which improves current golfers’ performance and helps recruit future golfers as well. This gift, along with others, has been designated for development of a much-needed short game facility for the men’s and women’s golf teams.

    YuJa Media Video Creation Workshop Session

    Now that we have begun the transition to YuJa Media, you can learn how YuJa provides courses with media tools to take them to the next level. In this session, members of the CITL staff will provide an overview of YuJa, general how-to instructions for re-linking your videos, and how to best use this type of technology in your courses. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the session.

  • Budget Office – July Training Sessions

    Budget Office training sessions for July have been scheduled if anyone is interested! Below is a brief description of each training:

    General Budget Training: This training gives a big picture overview of the university budget, Banner screens, and budget revisions. This training is required for signature authority on budget revisions.

    Budget Banner Screen Training: This training focuses specifically on the Banner screens frequently used for budgeting purposes. This is an optional training course.

    Budget Shadow System Training: This training focuses specifically on our Shadow System Template. This is an optional training course.

    Eagle Pay Payment Site and Eagle Online Registration will be offline June 30 – July 1, 2021

    The Eagle Pay Payment Site and Eagle Online Registration will be offline during the following timeframe due to fiscal year-end processing:

    Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 4:30pm CST until Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 10:00am CST

    Students will not be able to make online payments or access registration during this time. This affects services such as Eagle Online Registration and Eagle Pay Payment Site.

    YuJa Media Transition Update

    We need all students and faculty to select the YuJa Media link in iLearn under “Media” to create their account. This is critical in the migration of videos from Kaltura to YuJa.

    Here’s how to create your account.

    Any videos created after June 25, 2021 will not be included in the automatic migration from Kaltura to YuJa Media. If you create additional videos after this point, you will have to download and re-upload your videos following these steps.
