Meet the Tech Tomorrow faculty leaders: Lenly Weathers, Education for Life
Lenly Weathers, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named the faculty leader for the Tech Tomorrow Education for Life goal.
“As the team leader for Education for Life, I am eager to reach out to students, faculty, staff and administrators to promote the priorities under this facet of Tech Tomorrow by improving current practices or creating new ones,” Weathers said. “This will mean continuing to evolve a Tech-unique general education curriculum to provide the foundation for technologically adept, analytically capable, career-ready graduates. Expanding the diversity of our student population is also a priority of Education for Life, as is the related goal of developing each student’s global awareness in our increasingly interconnected, global society.”
The previous leader for this goal was Ed Lisic, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Partial Road Closure/10th and Stadium
The contractor on the new Ashraf Islam Engineering Building will need to close part of the street at the corner of 10th and Stadium. If there are no issues this will hopefully only occur on Wednesday, April 13. Thank you for your patience with our new building project!

The Office of New Student & Family Programs announces Courtney Brehm as Director
The Office of New Student & Family Programs is pleased to announce that on April 1, Courtney Brehm assumed the role of Director. In this role, Courtney will continue to oversee the university’s new student orientation programs, as well as family and first-year programs. Courtney started her career at Tennessee Tech in 2016 and has worked in various roles within New Student & Family Programs, including Coordinator (2016-2018) and Assistant Director (2018-2022).

Mathematical Tools in Online Environments
Join the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at 11 am on April 12th for a session on mathematical tools that can be used in online course environments. During this session, Taylor Chesson will provide an overview of how to add different types of equations to iLearn quizzes as well as using LaTeX in assessments and assignments. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect in STEM Industry Panel, April 12
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society will be hosting a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR) in STEM Industry panel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. You can attend in person in LSC 1211, or virtually through Zoom. We have four panelists that are chemists or engineers in industry that will share their stories and how DEIR issues and practices impact their jobs and lives. Nominations Open for Tech Togetherness Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Tech Togetherness Awards sponsored by the Office of the Provost. The goal of Tech Togetherness is to bridge the gaps and create stronger relationships across administrators, faculty, staff, and the Tech community at large. As we wrap up another academic year, we want to acknowledge those who have helped us remain together in spirit and who have embodied the Wings Up Way.
If you know of an employee who: is encouraging or has initiative; is a team player; goes the extra mile to find solutions; builds better relationships by standing in the gap; or is simply considered an unsung hero, please consider nominating them for the Tech Togetherness Awards. All regular full-time and part-time Tennessee Tech employees are eligible for nomination. Any Tech employee, student, or friend of the university may nominate by filling out this online application. Support GA taxable amount
The Office of Graduate Studies is now sending a listing of the Support GA tuition benefits paid each semester on their behalf to the Payroll/Business Office. The Spring 2022 portion will be added to the taxable income on the April 29th paycheck. This will increase the tax liability and possibly the federal income tax deduction. This amount does not increase your net pay. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dustin Agee in Payroll at 931-372-3041.
Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d). These assistantships do not qualify for the $5,250 exclusion. -

Federal Work Study (FWS) Wages to Increase with Fall 2022!
The Office of Financial Aid is excited to announce Federal Work Study (FWS) wage rates will increase from $8 per hour to $10 per hour with the start of Fall 2022! The increase will better reflect the services provided by our FWS students on campus.
Entering freshmen who have been awarded may currently view their FWS eligibility through Eagle Online. Continuing students may check their FWS eligibility late May by viewing their Awards for 22-23 through Eagle Online.
If you are a student who is not yet awarded, but wish to be considered for FWS, please contact financialaid@tntech.edu with your full name and T#.
Students must accept an FWS award prior to searching for open positions within the Student Job Portal. All eligible FWS students will be notified by campus email once the Student Job Portal is open later this summer.

Come Make Furry Friends at Our Animal Shelter Event
Tech students are hosting an event for the Putnam County Animal Shelter event on April 12th. It will start at 9:30 a.m. and will be located at the RUC’s ground floor back porch area. The event is to raise awareness for why adoption is important and to encourage students to adopt from the Putnam County Animal Shelter.
