Inaugural Additive Manufacturing Day at Tennessee Tech
Join us for the Inaugural Additive Manufacturing Day at Tennessee Tech on November 30 from 10 am – 1 pm! One well-known type of additive manufacturing (AM) is 3D printing where a three-dimensional object is constructed from a CAD model or digital 3D model. This online event features presentations on AM with cement-based materials, multi-material AM, wire arc AM, AM in the United Kingdom, and more! Student Research and Creative Inquiry Day set for April 20-21, 2022
Research and Creative Inquiry Day is an annual event designed to promote undergraduate and graduate student research and creative inquiry and provide a venue for presenting that work. The 17th annual event will be held in person from April 20 to 21, 2022, in the Hooper Eblen Center.
The abstract submission portal will be open from Wed., Feb. 2, through Wed., March 9. Abstract guidelines can be found on the Office of Research website at https://www.tntech.edu/research/research-day/index.php.
Additional event information will be sent out in the spring, but we wanted to give you an opportunity to start thinking about your submission early.
New for this event, we will be collaborating with the Center for Career Development to offer students a resumé-critiquing opportunity from 9 to 11 a.m., Thursday, April 21, and several potential employers will be invited to the general poster viewing session that day to provide students valuable networking opportunities.

Please share this information with your students and consider including information related to Research and Creative Inquiry Day, as appropriate, in your spring course syllabi. Golden Eagle Seminar- Friday, Nov 19 at 3 p.m. in LSC 1211
The Student Members of the American Chemical Society invite you to join us for our annual Golden Eagle Seminar on Friday, Nov 19 at 3 p.m. in LSC 1211. Our speaker is Tech chemistry alumnus, Jon Peters. His presentation title is “Oxo Dilemma” and is the story of a large, multi-million lb/year commercial organic chemical process that had major challenges and how these challenges were successfully met. It will also include some information on the history of Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN. The event is free and open to anyone and does not require a scientific background. Cultural Appropriation: Fashion or Foul? – Exhibition and Panel Discussion
Join the Center Stage and the School of Human Ecology for an event focused around the impact that cultural appropriation has on our campus community and beyond. This event features both an in-person and virtual component.
On Friday, Nov. 19th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., guests can visit a garment exhibition in the Tech Pride Room featuring historic clothing items of cultural significance from the MacIndoe Historic Costume Exhibit, housed in the School of Human Ecology.
Immediately following the garment exhibition, guests are invited to join a virtual panel discussion via Zoom, featuring three experts from the campus community, regarding cultural appropriation and the impact it has on our campus. This will be an opportunity for guests to ask questions and learn more about the efforts being promoted here on campus to help inform all of our community about the effects of cultural appropriation.

Attention GAs: Tax Implications-’21 FA
The Office of Graduate Studies is now sending a listing of the GA taxable tuition benefits paid each semester on your behalf to the Payroll/Business Office. The Fall 2021 portion will be added to the taxable income on your November 30th paycheck. This will increase your tax liability and possibly your federal income tax deduction. This amount does not increase your net pay.
Here is an explanation of how the IRS treats assistantships:
Tuition benefits offered to graduate assistants are generally excluded from taxable income under section 117(d) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, section 117(d) only excludes from taxable income tuition benefits for graduate students who are engaged in teaching activities or research activities at the University. Graduate assistants not engaged in such teaching or research activities at the University cannot be excluded from taxable income under section 117(d). These assistantships do not qualify for the $5,250 exclusion. -

Join us for Cornucopia of STEM Safari Saturday for Pre-K – 3rd graders on November 20th from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Pumpkin pie, cranberries, and corn! Sounds like the recipe for a fun, STEM Safari with a Thanksgiving theme!A parent/guardian must remain with the student/students regardless of age. Safari Saturdays are flexible events, come and go as your family’s schedule allows.
Face masks are recommended and encouraged, but not required for vaccinated individuals.

Volunteers Needed! Cornucopia of STEM Safari Saturday
Volunteers are needed for a family outreach event on Saturday, November 20, 2021, from 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM at the Oakley STEM Center.
Volunteers will assist with hands-on STEM activities, event logistics, set up, and tear down. The event is open to families & their children ranging from Pre-K to 3rd grade. Please consider taking time to help & please share this opportunity with others who may be interested.

Safe Zone Training!
Peer Empowerment Program is hosting Safe Zone Training on Monday, November 29th. This training will take place in Bell Hall Rm 266, from 5:30-8pm.
Training will include activities focused on LGBTQIA+ vocabulary, addressing implicit biases, and asking the questions you may have about the community. All of this will help us form better safe spaces for those around us!
Everyone is welcome! Training is not limited to students. We encourage faculty and staff to attend! Please register by 11/26 using the Google Form:

Stand Up Comedian Corey Rodrigues to Perform on Campus
Get ready to laugh when stand up comedian Corey Rodrigues performs live on Thursday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. in Derryberry Auditorium! Corey was the winner of The Catch a New Rising Star, The Funniest Comic in New England and the Big Sky Comedy Festivals. He has been featured on Gotham Live, Laughs on Fox, and Laff Tracks television shows. In 2018 he released his Dry-Bar comedy special that has amassed over 40 million view world wide! He made his national debut on The Conan O’Brein Show in 2019 and in 2020 Rodrigues released his first half hour comedy special on EPIX. Corey can currently be heard daily on Sirius XM. The show is presented by the Student Government Association SOLO fund.
