Success Story: RAM Clinic Serves Another Successful Year
In 2022, the RAM clinic successfully served the Upper Cumberland communities another year. The RAM clinic (Remote Area Medical Clinic) is a major nonprofit organization, based out of Rockford, Tennessee, that operates pop-up medical clinics across the nation. Their free-of cost clinics deliver dental, vision, and medical services to underserved and uninsured individuals, providing relief and security to countless communities. RAM’s mission is to “to prevent pain and alleviate suffering by providing free, quality healthcare to those in need.” The clinic would not have been feasible without the student-led host group: S. McCall Price, Brayden Hammer, Jack Wiggins, J. Cole Murray, Alex Stovall, and Emma Gunnells. Faculty volunteer and instructor, Mrs. Coonce states, “We are proud of how these students represented TN Tech. Individual students volunteered 30+ hours, not to mention all their participation in the year-long preparation.” Thank you to everyone involved and keep #LivingWingsUp!

Budget Office – May Training
Budget Office training sessions for May are now scheduled if anyone is interested! Below is a brief description of each training:
General Budget Training: This training gives a big picture overview of the university budget, Banner screens, and budget revisions. This training is required for signature authority on budget revisions.
Budget Banner Screen Training: This training focuses specifically on the Banner screens frequently used for budgeting purposes. This is an optional training course.
Budget Shadow System Training: This training focuses specifically on our Shadow System Template. This is an optional training course.
Position Control Budget Training: This training focuses specifically on topics related to position control including new position set ups, personnel action forms, budget revisions for permanent positions, how to verify permanent position funding, lapsed salary, etc. This is an optional training course.

Learn basic interlacement techniques to build a collection of mini weavings. Experiment with structure, material and texture. Explore and discuss themes of the miniature, material character and accumulation while working diligently, inch-by-inch. This is a beginner or intermediate level workshop.
Join us at the Appalachian Center for Craft for an engaging and inspiring weekend workshop learning a new craft, all in a beautiful setting overlooking Center Hill Lake. We have a few spaces remaining in this wonderful workshop taught by Rebecca Smith, as well as many more workshops in several different mediums. Join us!

Earth Science Presents at the Geological Society of America Conference
Nine students and two faculty members from the department of Earth Science attended the 2022 Geological Society of America Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 7-9. Two students, Billy Clanton and Sydney Beltran, received URECA! Travel grants to attend the conference. Other students raised funds through the GeoClub to fund their travel.
Billy Clanton presented his senior thesis research on the Fort Payne Formation, a rock unit that outcrops near Celina, TN. Billy will attend graduate school at the University of Southern Mississippi this fall. Sydney Beltran presented her senior thesis research on alluvial fans and deltas in Norway. These features are Earth-based analogs for similar structures on Mars. Sydney received a Creative Inquiry Summer Experience award to continue her research this summer.
Dr. Bhattacharya presented results from his postdoctoral research on the Indus Basin which record evidence of a tectonic collision between the Indian and Asian plates. He will return to TTU as an Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences this fall.

Tennessee Tech students lauded for excellent writing
This year Tennessee Tech is a new member of the Southern Literary Festival, a consortium of Southern colleges and universities that gathers each spring to celebrate undergraduate writing. Three Tech students won monetary prizes at the 2022 conference: Michael Lewis and Angel Filyaw in fiction, and Michaela Crawford in poetry. Funded by a URECA grant from Tennessee Tech, these writers and their creative writing professors traveled to Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS, so that the students could present their work. The Southern Literary Festival was first held in 1937, and past winners of undergraduate prizes include Flannery O’Connor and Eudora Welty. Congratulations to our English majors for representing writing excellence at Tech!
