This spring, Tech started its Centennial celebration\u00a0with Charter Day to mark the 100th anniversary of\u00a0Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. The celebrations\u00a0continue this year with a variety of events and projects.<\/p>\n

Hundreds from the community participated in\u00a0the commemoration, so many that Derryberry Hall\u00a0Auditorium was standing room only and attendees\u00a0ate birthday cupcakes so quickly that catering staff\u00a0had trouble refilling the trays.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know Tennessee Tech would not exist today\u00a0if not for the support of the Upper Cumberland\u00a0community 100 years ago,\u201d said President Phil\u00a0Oldham. \u201cAs always, our community showed its\u00a0lasting commitment to our university. The audience\u00a0included families of our university\u2019s founders and so\u00a0many others for whom TTU has been part of their\u00a0lives and histories.\u201d<\/p>\n

The celebration included a skit in which area\u00a0actors and current students reenacted TPI\u2019s\u00a0controversial founding and told short stories of\u00a0notable alumni.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t get enough chances to celebrate\u00a0the significant milestones of our state,\u201d said Gov.\u00a0Bill Haslam. \u201cTech is the story of education in\u00a0Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n
