From increases in sponsored research to a record number of intellectual property disclosures, Tech\u2019s Office of Research and Economic Development is seeing a revitalized research effort across the university.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1063\" style=\"width: 565px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1063\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.tntech.edu\/visions\/files\/2017\/07\/Visions_Research_Group_28JUN16_00002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"565\" height=\"421\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000080;font-size: 10pt\">Tech professors Steven Anton, Ambareen Siraj and Adam Holley<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe support, inspire, incentivize and help develop faculty to pursue sponsored research,\u201d said Bharat Soni, vice president for research and economic development. \u201cBy November of 2016, we had already surpassed the total amount of sponsored research from the previous year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The total for the previous fiscal year (July 1, 2015\u2014June 30, 2016) was $11.2 million. By November 2016, Tech\u2019s sponsored research stood at $11.8 million. Soni\u2019s office has also seen significant growth in research proposal submissions.<\/p>\n<p>Along with sponsored research, the university supports innovation and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far this year, we have had a record 11 intellectual property disclosures, with two more to be filed soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soni says that an objective of his office is to spin off two companies based on Tech\u2019s intellectual property by the end of 2017-2018, as well as license two additional intellectual properties.<\/p>\n<p>Three of Tech\u2019s faculty researchers are showcased: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tntech.edu\/visions\/features\/computer-science-professor-leads-effort-to-improve-cybersecurity-education\/\">Ambareen Siraj<\/a>, computer science; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tntech.edu\/visions\/features\/engineering-professor-looks-to-improve-joint-replacement-procedures-by-use-of-smart-materials\/\">Steven Anton<\/a>, mechanical engineering; and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tntech.edu\/visions\/features\/physics-professor-receives-national-science-foundation-career-award\/\">Adam Holley<\/a>, physics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tennessee Tech is taking its research responsibilities to new heights.
