Whitson-Hester School of Nursing
Sarah Smith is a new instructor in the Whitson-Hester School of Nursing at Tennessee Tech. From running to camping, here are a few fast facts about her.
Where did you earn your degrees?
I earned my Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing (BSN) and my Master’s in Science of Nursing (MSN) through Tech.
Where have you previously taught?
Before becoming an instructor, I was the simulation lab coordinator at the Whitson-Hester School of Nursing for three years. I have practiced as a Registered Nurse for 12 years.
Is there a specific reason you chose Tech?
My father works here in the Business department and we live locally so it was a natural choice for me to go to Tech to complete my first degree. I had such a good experience with my BSN that I knew this is where I wanted to complete my MSN. I am very proud to claim Tech as my alma mater.
What are your favorite things about your profession?
My favorite thing about my profession is imparting knowledge to our nursing students. I get a lot of fulfillment out of knowing that in a matter of a couple hours they have more knowledge than they did when they showed up that morning.
What skills do you believe set you apart?
Because I was the simulation lab coordinator before becoming an instructor, I had a chance to work closely with students in a different capacity. Much of what I learned in that role I have taken with me into my current position. I also have a very informal, down-to-earth personality, which helps me connect and develop trust with my students.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy running and camping.
